It’s been a while since we last heard from this wonderfully named band of reprobates, far too long in fact and in a world where everything is being painted nice neutral colours and we’re being told to think a certain way or there’ll be trouble, it’s rather nice to be reminded that we’re not all sheep.
There’s plenty in life that offends me but mainly it comes down to two things: hypocrisy and political correctness. There’s plenty I love too: and music or art that makes you feel nothing is sacred is right up there with them.
‘Drink This Party Dry’ is an opener that reeks of the 70’s and sounds like the Ramones fresh off the construction site, decked out in workbooks with a week’s manual labour behind them and a weekend of alcohol-fueled mayhem ahead. ‘I’m Not in Love’ that follows that fine tune is not a 10cc cover (nor for that matter is the Bluesy stomp of ‘Anal Annie’ that follows) it’s a song about lust with a rather nice bass line and New York Dolls meets Zodiac Mindwarp vibe.
After ‘Anal Annie’, which is no more decadent than say Steel Panther but with a lot more grit and far less hairspray, ‘Spray My Love’ an ode to facials has a touch of The Pistols; and ‘The Finger’ raises one nicely with a wail of guitar and far more NWOBHM with New York attitude. ‘Attention Whore’ round out the first six with a nice speed-fueled “fuck you” to those people we all know.
The other ‘six-pack’ is just as good, Dirty Sleazy Rock and Roll just as it says on the packet: this is music with dirt under the fingernails and plenty of over-spilling attitude. In Thunderfuck & The Deadly Romantics, Hamilton has a diamond in the rough here, and you can imagine that where it’s really at is seeing them blow this shit up live; especially when you hear tunes like ‘Get My Hole’ surely a phrase that will be from their time in Scotland and the fierce and down and dirty ‘JaegerBomb,’ as well as the deliberately provocative but condescending ‘#MeToo.’
