INTERVIEW: Brock Lindow – 36 Crazy Fists

36 Crazy Fists

Alaskan riff masters 36 Crazyfists are teaming up with Aussie heavyweights Superheist for a whirlwind tour around Australia.

Unbridled honesty cast in unpredictable metallic soundscapes and icy melodies is the best way to describe Alaska’s 36 Crazyfists. The northern darkness of their homeland proving to be the perfect atmosphere for them to craft some of the greatest riffage of recent times. Their music has been featured on films such as Resident Evil Apocalypse and they’ve racked up millions of streams. Their 2015 album, Time And Trauma, crashed into the US Billboard Heatseekers chart at Number 2, which was a career best and it received high praise from the global heavy music press.

Album number 8, late 2017’s Lanterns, sees 36 Crazyfists as a razor sharp, honed metalcore machine. This will be the bands first visit to Australia since they tore it apart back in 2011 as part of Soundwave. We threw a few random questions at frontman Brock Lindow ahead of the tour to help kick off the upcoming party down under.

We hear on the grapevine  that later this year you guys are celebrating 25 years as a band. Ups and downs aside, what do you believe has been the key to keeping this band strong and together?

Brock: The brotherhood of the band is such a part of us. It’s way beyond the music, we have been in each other’s lives for so long and had so many ups and downs together that it just takes on a life of its own.

What is the most valuable advice someone gave to you about the music industry in general?

Brock: To always do what you feel is honest and true to your music and who you are as people.

What is your favorite 36 CF track of all time and why?

Brock: Man that’s a hard one, playing “Slit Wrist Theory” live and having the crowd sing it back to us has always been such a killer feeling. So if I had to choose, at least in a live sense I guess I’d go with that one.

Name two Alaskan bands that the rest of the world needs to be aware of right now and why?

Brock: THERA are incredible and such a cool band, the drummer is  a total badass and Decepticide, brutal heavy band.

If you could  only take 3 albums on tour with you what would they be and why?

Brock: Metallica, Master of Puppets, fave album of all time. Jeff Buckley, Grace, because I need that balance of heavies and moody sexiness and lastly I’d go with Chris Stapleton, Traveler, that album just plain rules.

In terms of the various platforms of buying music are you a purest and like to buy a physical album or for convenience sake a digital copy of an album?

Brock: Well I’m a convenience guy mostly these days but I still have a massive cd collection. I do like ready the lyrics and looking at the art, but most of my music is on my phone these days.
