Rough Rockers - Smoke & Mirrors

There’s an Aussie connection to this new release with guitarist Joe Matera handling axe duties along with long time guitarist Hällström for Swedish band Rough Rockers. And for Classic Rock fans there’s also a guest appearance by none other than Graham Bonnet (Alcatraz, Rainbow).

What you get is a nice mix of classic and melodic rock starting ff with the rather Magnum-like ‘No More Heroes’ which gets right to business and despite an almost ‘Tap-esque’ spoken word pre-chorus. Who said Rock wasn’t meant to be fun!

‘Murder At Midnight’ throws in a little vintage Deep Purple riff with a vocal that melds Rock, Punk and Steve Harley; whilst the title track sports a mighty riff offset against a Darkness-like vocal.

The final couple of tracks see a change in vocalist – ‘Rebel at Heart’ (which also features acoustically) features guitarist Joe Matera who has a different more melodic approach and a sixties Pop vibe that is pretty cool.

Final track sees Bonnett make a guest appearance,  handling the vocals on ‘Unleash The Beast’ the hardest rocking track here and one that smacks of NWOBHM.

Not bad at all.
