ALBUM REVIEW: Jerry Hull – Made in Memphis

Self-Released - December 18th 2016

This is an interesting release, and Jerry Hull’s fourth in a the space of just a couple of years.  At 14 tracks it might not be as long as his previous release – Cherokee Moon’ which weighed in at 28 tracks but it is nicely diverse – encompassing within the singer-songwriter milieu influences as diverse as Americana, gospel, country, jazz, pop, rock, ragtime, blues, boogie woogie, and the Memphis Sound.

Stylistically there’s a little of Elton John, and more than a touch of Billy Joel and even Burt Bacharach in Hull’s work that begins with the ‘singer-songwriter’ MOR of opener ‘She’s Coming Back’ which is a more than competent introduction that draws you in before the enticing ‘Silver Wings’ offers an even gentle pleasure.

For an album that encompasses so much there are bound to be hits and misses and it’s largely down to personal taste ‘Angel’s Wings’ has some nice keys but seems somehow unfinished, whilst tracks like ‘1969 Mexico Connection’ if just for the piano solo, are well worth a listen, and that together with the title track and the up-tempo ‘Two Doors Down’ really show that Mr Hull has something to say.

This isn’t ‘Rock’ of course and strictly for those seeking some lighter fare, but take a bite and you just might find something tasty.
