Rock and roll has produced many extraordinary singers, but very few have transcended the role of vocalist to become genuine icons. Chris Cornell was one of those rare artists. Possessing one of the most powerful, expressive and instantly recognisable voices in rock history, Cornell helped redefine heavy music through his work with Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog and an outstanding solo career.

Chris’ influence continues to resonate with musicians and fans around the world, and in this episode of A Rock And Roll Life, Mark sits down with Lzzy Hale to celebrate that incredible legacy through the remarkable KING ULTRAMEGA project. The conversation centres around KING ULTRAMEGA’s explosive new interpretation of Soundgarden’s classic “Loud Love,” a song that first appeared on the band’s landmark 1989 album Louder Than Love.
More than three decades later, it remains one of the defining moments of Soundgarden’s early catalogue—a perfect showcase for Cornell’s astonishing vocal range, fearless songwriting and the band’s unique ability to fuse crushing riffs with unforgettable melodies. Joining producer Mark Menghi on the recording is an all-star cast of musicians. Lzzy Hale delivers a passionate vocal performance that honours Chris Cornell without ever trying to imitate the impossible. On guitar is Alex Skolnick (Testament/Metal Allegiance), while Dave Krusen (Pearl Jam) provides the drums, creating a performance that captures the spirit, energy and analogue warmth of the original recording while giving it a fresh identity of its own.
Rather than simply revisiting a classic, KING ULTRAMEGA approached the recording with enormous respect for the source material. Mark Menghi deliberately embraced an old-school production philosophy, seeking to recreate the warmth and feel of the original late-’80s recording instead of chasing a modern, over-polished sound. Mixed and mastered by Josh Wilbur, with artwork by Mark Menghi and an accompanying video created by Tom Flynn, the finished result is both a celebration and a heartfelt tribute. During the interview, Mark and Lzzy discuss what made Chris Cornell such a singular artist.
They explore the incredible range that made him one of rock’s greatest vocalists, but also the qualities that often receive less attention—his remarkable songwriting, his ability to communicate emotion, and the magnetic stage presence that could hold an audience spellbound from the moment he walked on stage. They reflect on how Cornell could effortlessly move between delicate vulnerability and overwhelming power, creating songs that remain every bit as compelling decades after they were first written.
The discussion also explores why “Loud Love” remains such an important song in Soundgarden’s catalogue. With its huge riffs, unmistakable groove and soaring vocal performance, it perfectly captured a pivotal moment in the band’s evolution and helped establish the blueprint for much of what followed. It remains a fan favourite and a shining example of Chris Cornell’s extraordinary ability to combine heaviness, melody and emotion into something uniquely his own.
As Lzzy says, “If there was ever a time to be spreading a message of LOUD LOVE, it’s now.” It’s a sentiment that perfectly captures the spirit behind the project. Importantly, KING ULTRAMEGA is about more than music.
The release is raising funds and awareness for MusiCares, the Recording Academy’s nonprofit organisation that provides mental health services, addiction recovery support and emergency assistance to members of the music community. It is a fitting tribute to Chris Cornell’s legacy and a reminder of the importance of supporting those who dedicate their lives to making music.
