LIVE REVIEW: MUDVAYNE & COAL CHAMBER Co-Headline Tour ’24

Metro City, Perth - 21st February 2024

Coal Chamber opened the proceedings with the ever popular ‘Loco’ as the crowd went banana like I expected. The energy from Coal Chamber is wild, with their electric light show, their enthusiasm, there’s no way that you’re not going to be blown away by this very interesting and untamed band.

Coal Chamber just stick to what works, they’re not fancy, they’re just hard hitting and powerful.  As they ploughed through their setlist, they played some bangers like I.O.U Nothing, Drove, and the mean beat that is Dark Days.

Oddity and Another Nail In the Coffin where continued mayhem, as the scent of men flower through the air, you know what I’m talking about, it’s that moments where 500 Men’s deodorants proved they can’t last the test of time. Props to the sound of Metro City, one punter remarked that the snare drum sounded sick.

What a way to start the show. I was so impressed with Coal Chamber, it really started the proceedings off the way we needed it to.

The relentless assault that was Mudvayne smashed onto the stage and from the get go the ante was upped when they cracked fan favourite ‘Not Falling’.

It’s a testament to the band to be this good after all these years apart. It almost makes me question how they could possibly disappear from this monster they created for so long, when clearly it works and clearly it is their bread and butter.

The crowd were HOT and the electricity was in the air. ‘World So Cold’ was another huge highlight, the band just knows how to work the crowd and make every second mean something.

I’m not going to do a blow by blow account of the gig because typing my notes with a bright light behind it is annoying people, but I already think I might call this show the gig of the year here in Perth.

They finished the show with Happy? And Dig, as is tradition, and it was such an insane bundle of energy being shot from the band to the crowd and right back at them, I turn to my side and see some young metalhead chick losing her lifeforce over the set, shouting every single lyric, escaping the worries of life for 90 minutes and I realize when a band like Mudvayne play, at least for that duration of time, for some people – everything is right in the world.
