Arguably one of the most unique and captivating metal bands on earth, Apocalyptica returned to Australian shores this past week to play the biggest rooms they have ever played in Australia. Our resident Perth metal photographer flew to Sydney to catch the last show of the tour, held at the iconic Sydney Opera House.

This band has been a favorite since I first seen them in Perth a few years ago. I made my way to Sydney to the iconic Opera House! What an impressive setting for this bands performance we were about to be treated to.

The band start off the first half of the show, covering Metallica songs from not just one album but many from their established discography, with a more classic note easing us into an evening that was one of the most memorable shows I’ve been to, to date.

After a short intermission the 4 cello players are joined on stage with a set of drums that have been tuned into a sculpture of art, and a drummer who has so much stage presence you just feel his energy no matter where you are sitting in the stalls. The songs start to up tempo and the guys are moving about the stage and the crowd sing along to the songs they know such as, “Unforgiven”, “Whereever I May Roam” and an epic encore with “One”. The Cellos sound amazing combined with the Acoustics of the Opera House.

During the set we were treated to some stories of how the band came together when Eicca had the idea of playing metal on cellos with some funny moments along the way since forming in 1993. After a 2 and a half hour set all I could say was this show was epic by all accounts!
