Release Date: November 15th 2019 - [self released]

Remission - The Tether's End

With 11 tracks, 53 minutes of music and a deluge of captivating riffs, it is set to be a tour de force of blisteringly fast and crushingly heavy metal.

Never have there been truer words than those above that were used when Perth thrash metal act Remission announced their debut album “The Tether’s End” earlier in 2019. Upon hearing the new tracks on offer, it’s clear that this band is set to fill the void of thrash in Western Australia, albeit in very much heavy fashion.

The debut album “The Tether’s End” from Remission is a scorching start for the young group who in recent times has shared the stage with Germany’s Destruction and New Zealand’s Alien Weaponry and the band carry that experience into these new songs with full gusto. Kicking off with heavy thrasher “Mother War“, Remission appear to really make an impact early on with a lot of nice touches including a great little drum solo a little way into the track. Lots of switch ups here keep you on your toes which is what good metal should do and this provides that endlessly.

Moving down the album tracklist we start to get a sense of Remission’s core sound and plenty of melody and dark heaviness abound in bucket loads. “Temples” has a darker tone and a lot of groove but the following track “Submit To The Order” carries that forward more with brilliant breakdowns making this one of the early highlights on the album.

Anticipation is something Remission seem to be good at with building intros leading into all out thrash attacks like in “Black Scorched Earth” and the title track as examples. Another big highlight here though is “Like Tears In Rain“, a song that just gets better and better the more it progresses with galloping riffage smashing through. “Transcending Chaos” provides a bit of dynamics and contrasting to that, “Forced Entropy” is a short but fun-filled thrasher that harkens back to the old school days.

Closing out the album and the fun doesn’t stop here by any means with “Architects Of Oblivion” going a little more progressive and heading into different territories. The combination of that with the gutteral vocals is reminiscent of Revocation style death/thrash and even as far back into the album as this, is another highlight of the album. “Breaking The Sun” ends things with what may be considered the most different piece here but 11 songs in and it’s all gold standard stuff, no fillers at all.

Not bad for a first album, certainly one of the better metal releases to come out of Australia in 2019 which makes Remission definitely ones to keep an eye out for in the future.

8/10
