Coming all the way from Germany, three piece psych blues rock act Samsara Blues Experiment kicked off their first ever tour in Australia in Perth at this year’s Armageddoom event which featured a mix of great Aussie bands. Loud, raucious guitars and a room full of punters enjoying the experience, it was certainly a good night out.

It was the hometown locals that started the night out with King Zog bringing their sludge and doom to the forefront early on, the crowd already coming through to check out the heavy sounds pouring through the speakers. Following them were Bayou who brought a little more heaviness to the table as their swampy sludgey sound rocked the crowd hard as they always do. Word on the grapevine is the band have a new lineup but from a musical standpoint, the band sounded as good as ever.

The east coast psychedelic sounds of Seedy Jeezus came through next as the Melbourne act performed their first ever show in Perth. This was a band on my radar for quite some time and while many treks have been made to the great old city of Melbourne in recent times, the stars never quite lined up to see this band live. But that changed tonight as the threesome showed why they have been making some noise both on stage and from punters and press raving on about them, their psychedelic rock sound is fairly reminiscent of Earthless type stuff with mostly instrumentals blasting through. It’s always great to see other bands from across the country bring a new experience to Perth and the fans loved it, this will be a band that needs to come back for sure. but for those on the east coast, definitely recommend your time with them.

The German trio known as Samsara Blues Experiment hit the stage soon after and it was a real treat to finally see these guys come all this way given that they are a fairly underground band. The band have obviously made an impact on some judging by the crowd who came to see them, the shirts displayed by punters who were excited to see these guys bring their trademark bluesy rock sound to the west coast.

Setlist wise they mixed it up and admittedly since it had been a while since I had really gone through their back catalogue, the whole show felt like one big, never ending song as each lengthy track bled into one another. Part of that was also due to the fact that the band seemed pretty focused on the music, spending very little time talking to the crowd and concentrating on putting out as many songs as possible in their hour or so that they had.

Tracks from their latest album “One With The Universe” was included in the performance and matching it up their earlier material, you could see the evolution in their sound as things went from full blown psychedelic to straight edge classic rock, from instrumentals to vocal parts, it was all there and the band brought their A game to get their point across. “Hangin’ On The Wire” was a highlight but the real jammy moments that came across almost improvised were just as memorable as the songs themselves and showed that real lively sound that the band have.

It was definitely a real treat to see Samsara Blues Experiment live in person and hopefully the show won them a few extra fans in the process. Let’s hope they make the trek to Australia again after this tour!
