The Darkhorse - The Carcass Of The Sun

The UK has been pumping out some of the best doom and sludge bands of the modern era lately and this latest offering from The Darkhorse titled ” The Carcass Of The Sun” is one beast of an album that will probably become one of the top releases of the year for us.

I had to give each and every song several listens over just to really soak in everything that was being played. On first listen there’s the obvious references to Black Sabbath and Crowbar but when you start listening to details and song patterns, there’s some mighty grooves and lots of twists and turns that are reminiscent of Superjoint Ritual and a little grindcore thrown in. But what The Darkhorse do differently here is rely more in emphasising on the hooks of the riffs and the beat and stay away from just merely being aggressive.

While it’s a super heavy album there is no double kicks and crazy solos and the usual in your face stuff, it’s just a beautifully seamless collection of songs that simply riff out and headbang all the way through. “741” is wildly energetic with it’s many tempo changes as is “Hecatomb” which is epic as hell. “Dead Crows” is dark and oozes sludge while “Nema” is a southern fried rocker that bounces along before breaking down two thirds of the way through into one of the highlights of the album. This is some seriously good music and it never waivers in quality at any moment at all.

Vocally it’s also on point having a slight resemblance to Phil Anselmo but the guitar tones are what stands out the most with a raw and tight sound which gives the whole album a tonally perfect listening experience. Even the drums sound crystal clear and thud on every beat which can sometimes in a lot of sludgey bands be lost in the mix. Along with the riffs it drives the songs to it’s headbanging induced directions.

There’s only so much you can describe The Darkhorse in what they offer but if you want something that grabs your attention and takes you for a wild ride then look no further than ” The Carcass Of The Sun”. This is a seriously good album that will keep you coming back for more and more.
