If there was just one word to describe the two opening shows of the Hothouse Flowers Australian/New Zealand tour in Perth, Western Australia, that word is “epic!”.
First on stage with his familiar acoustic guitar was Australian-Irish singer/storyteller Paul Jackson, who hails from Perth but is now based in Co.Clare, entertaining the fans with his own style of indie-folk rock.
After a short interlude it was time for the lads to hit the stage – Liam Ó Maonlaí, Fiachna Ó Braonáin, Peter O’Toole, Dave Clarke and Martin Brunsden were greeted by the roar of the excited crowd! A crowd who were all there for one reason – when you get a chance to see your favourite Irish band of all time play a sold out show as part of their first Australian/NZ tour in 20 years, you make sure you are there.
Liam was instantly captivating as he took us through mesmerising piano melodies, a spoken reflection, a little Irish language singing before rocking into a succession of hits with the band. With the occasional moments of Irish traditional music beats in between, to excite the crowd even more.
The grand finale piece was the band’s signature crescendo of Irish traditional music led by Fiachna on tin whistle. Which left a sea of smiling faces entranced by the night of musical magic they had just experienced, eagerly waiting for their return.
When I asked Fiachna after the show, how did it feel to be back in Australia after so many years, he smiled as he said “I don’t think I’ve landed yet!”. Which really sums up the pure magic of it all.
