LIVE REVIEW: THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT With Special Guest YOMI SHIP

The Astor Theatre, Perth - 10th February 2024

This was a sweet deal for me as a reviewer because I got to cover The Butterfly Effect playing ‘Begins Here’ in full. I couldn’t believe my luck when I found this out because this album was a massive deal for me and my friends when I was 18-19 years old, which was the last time I got to see The Butterfly Effect in person.

They started off with the Intro song to ‘Begins Here’ and cranked into ‘Perception Twin’ and this was unbelievable from the outset. The light show, the pomp and circumstance, ‘Consequence’ was next and Clint Bogue was still standing in front of a big white Video Screen doing his thing. ‘One Second Of Insanity’ was next and it was when Clint finally gave the front of the stage some attention, and it was really fun the way they slowed down for the chorus and they gave us a real nicely edited version of the song, and the crowd were bloody loving it.

They began a bridge and prelude into ‘Crave’ next, which tore the roof off. This song had been in my head all day. The boys were really tearing it up on stage and crikey, it was only early on!

‘Beautiful Mine’ was next and they played a slower version of the song before hitting that chorus one last time in its original form. Very cool.

‘Filling Silence’ was next which was a banger that had my mate Mike absolutely going ballistic. This is a guy who’s a complete nerdberger, wearing glasses, he’s like the human form of Milhouse from the Simpsons and there we were going crazy like he had won the lottery.

‘Always’ was next which is a crowd favourite if I’ve ever known one, the swell of the crowd was something to behold, the energy made us all one. My mate Paul surprised me with a hug during the song and his wife, next to him, was absolutely losing her proverbial shit, and it was inspiring.

‘Without Wings’ was next and here we go. It was about to go haywire when they hit that chorus. In real time I am typing this as it’s happening. That slow burn. The Butterfly Effect are kings at this. Building slowly but surely. Here we go. Yep it went off like a human being on the brink of climax. Boy, was it Sweat Heady in that building.

Overwhelmed was next, as we near the completion of the album. They cranked this acoustically which was a fine change and a palette cleanser for the heavier stuff we were just delivered prior.

They did an encore of ‘Gone’ from their 2nd album ‘Imago’, which was a nice little sing-along. Overall it was a steamy night at The Astor,  even with a singlet on, all you could tell from me was that I looked like I had just battled Rodger Federer in a 5 set game of Tennis. And won.

‘Window and The Watcher’ from ‘Final Conversation of Kings’ was next. Everyone around me knew this stuff but I had no idea what was going on, it may as well have been an obscure cover from Tears For Fears when they felt like being experimental. I kid. I am just a ‘1st album snob’. The song was great, and everyone was enjoying the rock n’ roll sauna we were experiencing. We just needed to be old men in towels. It was warm in there. A few more tunes after this and we were done for the night, it was a tremendous performance from the band and one I certainly won’t forget anytime soon.
