HOUSTON – “IV” Album Review

October 8th 2021

There’s an assuredness about the perfect AOR of opener ‘She is the Night’ that makes you realise how good these guys are at pulling off the sweet soft sounds of the early 80’s. Sadly it’s been 5 years since their last outing ‘III’ and so the equally imaginatively titled ‘IV’ feels like an eon later.

There’s more guitar added to the mix on ‘You’re Still the Woman’ that allows Hank Erix to flex his vocal muscles a little more. And whilst ‘Hero’ makes all the right moves it’s a rather perfunctory ‘Foreigner-like’ ramble comparatively. In all honesty though this is silky smooth AOR as good as anything out there you will hear today full of great songs.

Highlights include that opener ‘She Is The Night’, the Wonderfully melodic Pop Rock of ‘A Lifetime In A Moment’, and the wonderfully building ‘Until The Morning Comes’ but there’s also more guitar driven stuff like ‘Heart of a Warrior’ that really hit the spot. They also save one of the best for last – ‘Into Thin Air’ which closes on a high – it’s a faster, uplifting number that just leaves you wanting more.

If you love bands like Survivor, Foreigner and lighter 80’s AOR fare you will love this. It’s close to their very best.

8.5/10
