Descend to Acheron - The Transience of Flesh

South Australia death metal act Descend To Acheron construct sonic emissions that are both brutal and memorable in equal measures. Comprising of members of some of Australia’s most respected and hard-hitting bands, Descend To Acheron have honed their song writing skills to craft ferocious yet intelligent blackened death metal. The result has finally come in the form of their debut EP release “The Transience of Flesh”.

Taking influences from such acts as Suffocation, Behemoth and The Amenta, Descend To Acheron don’t mess around with their debut EP a true slab of the extreme metal genre. Uncompromising, hauntingly dark and mighty ferocious from track to track, “The Transience of Flesh” ticks all the right boxes within the death metal style of music.

Kicking off with the title track, the band shows a bit of old school early on before launching into even further extremities of the genre. A deceivingly haunted mellow section briefly soften things up before it all opens back up into the realms of gory musical detail. Solid start so far.

Plague Of Superstition” is another scathing attack but the real fun begins halfway as they step up another level with string bending riffs and a bit more groove to really nail it hard. A two parter in the form of “The Godless” will divide a few listeners with part 1 being a real highlight featuring crazy rhythms and dynamic tempos switching gears in every direction. This proggy juggernaut will have more than just your traditional death metal fans salivating at the wildly erratic nature of this beast while part 2 has more of a black metal feel with walls of guitar noises emanating in and around subtle melodic passages.

Your Suffering Is A Gift” continues things on, starting out with solid brutality and ending in a more gothic operatic way. “From The Mouths Of Wolves” rounds things off with a long intro, a little avant garde stylings and some melancholic parts that helps separate this one from the rest of the pack.

Dave Haley of Pyscroptic fame lends a hand behind the kit, giving further reason to check out Descend To Acheron and this subsequent release that hopefully will be the beginning of more to come.

7/10
