American band Soulfly fronted by former Sepultura vocalist Max Cavalera is currently on tour supporting their latest album Ritual which was released on October 18th, 2018. On February 11th the tour made a stop at The Gramercy Theatre in New York City. Soulfly is supported on this tour by Incite and Kataklysm and in NYC they were joined by Chaoseum.

After leaving heavy metal music heavyweights Sepultura, Max Cavalera started his own project called Soulfly, which quite fast gained track amongst his fans. Right now the band have become a staple in the thrash and groove metal genre. After a few lineup changes, the band added Max’s son Zyon Cavalera on the drums who has been behind the kit since 2012, Mike Leon on bass since 2015, with Marc Rizzo on lead guitar being the longest serving band member next to Max.

They entered the New York City show operating as well oiled machine, with the tour in it’s mid-way point and all bands having found their comfort zones.

Soulfly opened their set with three songs from their current album “Ritual“, starting off with title track, followed by “The Summoning” and “Under Rapture”. The atmosphere was absolutely electrifying, Max was delivering the same sort of growls as in his Sepultura days, and Marc as always was going bonkers. Zyon proved his worth on drums and Mike was steady at bass.

Some noteworthy songs on the set included Rise of the Fallen, Prophecy and Jumpdafuckup. Obviously the place was rocking during the last one, a classic now 20 years on and testing the structural integrity of the building.

Altogether the show was very professional, loud and exciting. Soulfly proved why they are one of the best bands in their genre, and Max hasn’t lost a beat.
