EP Review: King Voodoo – 4

DR John Surgery Records - November 8th, 2019

There’s something primal and essential about the sound of Liverpool’s King Voodoo, whose debut EP ‘4‘ is out on November 8th. There’s also a great use of space in their sound, big chunky guitars and great vocals, and whilst opener ‘Fever’ is certainly a track to get the crowd jumping it’s not the best here, indeed the deeper toy dig the more you realise that this band has more than most to offer. Recorded wonderfully by Ian Johnson, and mixed by Pete Newdeck (Midnite City, Jesse Damon, Grim Reaper) they also sound damned good too.

Opening with ‘Fever’ you get a feeling of a band not interested in labels and genres, this is music built on the framework of guitar, it’s heavy, direct but also draped with soulful vocals and inescapable harmonies. ‘Fever’ just rides a mile-wide groove drive by guitar and then by vocal it’s a greta balance and a great rock song.

‘Creep’ has a cool riff and some nice wailing guitar to open before hitting an Alice In Chains like landscape, full of dynamics and earthy leads, it’s a great double-hit to open. The mood is lightened by the cool slow waters of ‘Hold On’ that rests its head on acoustic guitars and just drifts, it’s a beautiful moment to split the EP in two.

The collection rounds out with ‘Plain To Me’ a song I can’t stop playing and probably my favourite here, a little taste of early Collective Soul with an edge, it sits very nicely here. Closer ‘TVC’ like a lot of the material here really showcases a band with everyone pulling in the same direction, I love the bass and drums on this EP  they really hold everything together to allow the guitar and vocals to add the flourishes. ‘TVC’ could well be the most commercial track here and again has that old school rock vibe seen through the eyes of a band maybe not even old enough to have seen Nirvana or the Seattle movement in the flesh.

So much promise here and definitely a band to watch.
