EP REVIEW: Before Fire – Before Fire

Self-released - August 23rd 2019

Persistence pays off you know, I had so much trouble downloading this EP to review I almost gave up but thanks to the persistence of Matthias I didn’t and I am so glad I didn’t give up ass this could just well be one of my favourite releases of the year.

Hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark this EP, which comes after a bunch of singles, is the start of big things for ‘Before Fire’ as they move to London to further pursue their dreams. And based on what I hear here in these five songs the band has every chance of breaking through.

‘Risk It’ the EP opener leaves you imagining Mother Love Bone doing Zeppelin and there’s is a wonderful feel of the 70’s in the tracks that follow, but there’s also plenty more that leaves you in no doubt that these guys have plenty to say. ‘Dead Eyes’ that follows has a sparser sound driven by riff and voice and is equally captivating but for completely different reasons.

Third track ‘Look My Way’ is maybe even cooler, introduced by drum before the chunky riff breaks in, its a nice Blues rocker; but for me it’s ‘Who’s to Blame’ another lighter moment that really hits the spot: it’s soulful and Bluesy, languid and delicate, and it’s a helluva mature song with some great guitar to set it all off.

‘Are You Listening’ is a wonderful way to close, a nice high tempo rocker, that simply smokes leaving you both convinced that you have heard something that could be huge and craving even more. It’s a happy limbo to be in.

There’s more than a touch of Greta Van Fleet and Rivals Sons about this release, but dare I say it a fair amount more originality than the former. If you love a great voice a solid rhythm section and some wonderful guitar – this is going to be on your radar.

The best EP you’ll hear all year!
