ALBUM REVIEW: Kold Creature – A Weakened State

Out Now - 2017

Hailing from the southside of Brisbane – Kold Creature is yet another reason to love the sunshine state and the melodic groove metal stylings of their residents. After an atmospheric opening with the largely superfluous ‘Awakening’, first single ‘Edge Of Gravity’ hits in a bluster of heavy riffs and fierce almost metalcore vocal. It’s nice and uncompromising just how we like it.

The pacey, thrashy ‘Ripped And Burned’ hits next but also brings in some more melodic elements which make you realise that Kold Creature is a far from simple proposition. Things take a decidedly heavier turn for the mini-epic ‘The draining’ which ups the aggression again and is nicely spliced with searing solos and unsettling mid section that puts you on notice that further experimentation might be on the cards.

The rather good ‘Kids that Kill’ takes a NWOBHM base and  ups the guitar, whilst ‘New Scars’ just goes for it in a wall of guitar, before ‘Second Hand Gifts’ one of our favourites here, adds melody and more than a hint of Thrash again to the mix.

They save some of the best for last too, the acoustic opening to ‘The Grinding’ really works well and builds into a solid wall of Metal. That’s followed by the Thrash meets Metalcore of ‘Soul Regression’ and the hardened Metal finale of the rousing ‘Stroke’.

If you like your Metal on the aggressive side with a hit of Thrash and an injection of Metalcore and some damned heavy guitar, this is the assault to the senses you’re waiting for.
