ALBUM REVIEW: A Devil’s Din – One Hallucination Under God

Self-Released - September 29th 2017

There’s a lilting ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’ sound to the opening track ‘Eternal Flow’ on the new ‘A Devils’ Din’ album ‘One Hallucination Under God’ that is quite beguiling, but in the mix there’s far more ‘California’ in the air than the brooding of BOC. If you love your psychedelic rock you’ll love this if you can handle the other heady elements like The Beatles and vintage Pink Floyd that they throw into the mix.

This album indeed is a long way from the bands dark and brooding debut ‘One Day All This Will Be Yours’ and sounds as if it was created decades ago, it’s still the same core of psychedelic and classic rock but with more emphasis on melody this time around, and that gives it a generally more ‘uplifting’ feel. ‘Brave New World’ that follows that opener manages to capture the ethos of the more experimental period of The Beatles but adds a distinctive new world edge.

As the album progresses you find yourself falling in love, just a little at first, but with every twist comes a new smile.  ‘Nearly Normal’ is almost 60’s UK beat band territory tinged with Barret-era Pink Floyd; whilst  ‘Who Are You’ adds Hawaiian guitar retaining that Barret connection. And the deeper you get the more you are ensnared, I never thought I’d hear an album like this in 2017 and you know what? I want more.

Chill out and listen.
