There’s something special about catching a band in a room as intimate as the Foxlowe Arts Centre, and Parker Barrow made every inch of that stage count. From the opening bars of “Nothin’ Left to Save” it was clear this wasn’t going to be a polite, sit-down affair — the energy from the band was there from note one and never let up.
The musicianship was superb throughout. Drummer Dylan Turner laid down a heavy, driving groove all night, with guitarists Alex Bender and Will Tipton trading inventive, fiery riffs on top. Keyboard player Eric Safka was a joy to watch, thoroughly expressive on every song and adding real depth and colour to the sound.
Meanwhile bassist Kyle Priber just oozed coolness, his laid-back demeanour anchoring the low end while the rest of the band raged around him. “Blinded” and “Novocaine” showed off the heavier side of their sound, while “The Healer” gave things a moment to breathe before “Olivia Lane” pulled the room back in.
But it was frontwoman Megan Kane who really lit the place up. Her energy was infectious — the kind of stage presence that has the whole room leaning in, whether she was working the mic during “Ruby’s Reckoning” or shaking a tambourine through “Count Your Dollars.” You could see it rubbing off on the rest of the band too, everyone feeding off each other right through to the one-two punch of “Glass Eyes Cryin’” and “Make It.”
They closed the main set in style, then came back for an encore cover of The Black Crowes’ “My Morning Song” — a perfect choice, and one that suited Kane and Turner’s sound down to the ground.
A brilliant night from a six-piece band that deserve every bit of the buzz building around them. Foxlowe Arts Centre once again proved itself a great little room for this kind of show. This band is a real buzz on the UK scene at the moment — catch them if you can!
