There’s several great rock bands in Las Vegas, Among that collective is one band who’s album I’ve been most looking forward to, The debut from The Far Worst. They have released a few singles ahead of the album and all of them have been great, For being a relatively new band they have a very strong sound.
“Monsters” starts things off properly with a white knuckled rocker, The drums from Brian Scott alternate between punchy fills and energetic driving rhythms. The riffs played by Andy Ingraham follow suit and bring the necessary power, This was definitely a great song to start the album.
I’ve seen people compare Singer Bree Elizabeth Forsberg to Lzzy Hale but I consider the similarities small, Bree is a different animal all together, Melodic and yet with enough grit to really rock these songs.
“Low Class Lover” is a mid tempo rocker with a LOT of groove, There’s almost a slight “The Stroke” by Billy Squire sound to this song, But I’d say with less posturing and more down and dirty swagger.
“Our Anarchy” picks up the pace a bit with another great grooving rocker that really gives the rhythm section space to shine, Jake Bruen‘s bass line really drives this song.
“Sweet Addiction” hits you right out the gate with some incendiary semi bluesy hard rocking riffs, Bree’s vocals on this are absolutely badass. This is one that fits the vibe of a show at a good rock club.
“Ashes Fall” sounds very modern and yet distinctly unique to this band, I love the melodies on this song. It rocks, It’s semi melancholy, It’s powerful. The riffs on this song are just intoxicating.
“Devil and I” goes for a little southern rock influence in the hard rock riffs on this song, The guitars are the real star of this song, Alternating in techniques depending on the section of the song. If I’m critiquing anything here it’s that I wish the solos were longer on this song and on a lot of the songs on this album. They start, I get into it, and then it’s over too quick. The ability is there, Stretch those solos out and make that shit sing! That aside, Chef’s kiss on this awesome song.
Next up is the title track, Some heavy early 90’s style hard rock riffs dominate this song, This feels like Subhuman Race era Skid Row. Down, Dirty, and heavy riffs that groove while the rhythm section brings the thunder. Bree’s powerful and gritty vocals fit the vibe of the song perfectly and there’s an excellent guitar solo on this track.
“SOS” announces itself with a basic drum and bass beat before the riffs kick in, Another great mid tempo rocker.
“Poison” gives you an unexpected change of pace, Some beautiful guitar melodies unlike anything else up to this point play as the bass hums in the background and drums play subtly before the power kicks on during the chorus. Bree’s vocals get even more space to shine here, I think from a rhythm perspective this is the most well structured and balanced track on the album, Maybe the best song on the record period. Everything works here and it leaves you wanting to start over again for another listen to this spectacular song.
“Dark Side” ends the album with another rocker, This is one I can see a little bit of the Halestorm comparisons but I’d say there’s a heavier sound to this song than I’ve heard that band do.
This is honestly a fantastic debut by what has become one of Las Vegas’s most exciting rock bands, Any hopes I had for it were exceeded and if they are starting this strong I can’t wait to see what The Far Worst do next.
