INTERVIEW: MATT WALTERS from FREEDOM OF FEAR chats ahead of Froth & Fury Fest!

FROTH & FURY 2026 HEADS TO ADELAID & PERTH JANUARY!

As Froth & Fury continues its rapid rise as one of Australia’s most ferocious heavy festivals, anticipation for the 2026 line-up is already reaching fever pitch. We caught up with Adelaide metal force Freedom Of Fear to talk about joining the festival’s first Perth edition, what fans can expect from their live assault, standout festival memories, and what’s next as they prepare for a major new chapter in their career.

The Rockpit: Froth & Fury has become one of the most anticipated heavy festivals in Australia – how does it feel to be part of the 2026 line-up?

Freedom Of Fear: We are really excited to be part of the first Perth Froth and Fury! We also had the privilege of playing the first and third Adelaide ones, and it’s been amazing witnessing the festival’s fast growth.

The Rockpit: For fans who haven’t seen you live before – what kind of energy or chaos should they expect from your set?

Freedom Of Fear: They should expect intensity!

The Rockpit: Do you approach festival sets differently from club shows or headline tours? Or is it full throttle no matter what?

Freedom Of Fear: Basically, the same no matter how big or small. However bigger stages mean we can move around more

The Rockpit: Who else on this year’s line-up are you personally excited to see or share the stage with?

Freedom Of Fear: Archspire, Aborted, Abbath, Nailbomb, Valhalore, Nicholas Cage Fighter. I’ll stop there before I list too many bands!!

The Rockpit: What ’s your pre-show ritual – anything that gets you in the zone before walking onstage?

Freedom Of Fear: Warming up and getting into our stage clothes is enough of a ritual. If possible, I like to warm up slowly with headphones in

The Rockpit: What does a festival like Froth & Fury mean to you as an artist in the heavy scene – especially in an Australian context?

Freedom Of Fear: As someone who grew up attending fests like Soundwave (which was basically like Christmas for me as a teen) , it’s great to have something similar growing. And to be one of the bands playing is really cool!

The Rockpit: What’s one track in your setlist that always hits the hardest live – either for the crowd or for you personally?

Freedom Of Fear: Entities or Nebula

The Rockpit: Festivals can be chaotic behind the scenes – any memorable (or ridiculous) stories from previous festival experiences you’re willing to share?

Freedom Of Fear: No fests have gone wrong enough to make an interesting story! But the most memorable for me have been Hammersonic (absolutely huge crowd, a billion degrees, and our first international show), or Blacken 2019 where we played in the red outback during sunset.

The Rockpit: What’s coming up next for you after Froth & Fury – touring, new music, or time in the studio?

Freedom Of Fear: Our new album is finished, so we will be making some music videos and dealing with all the other details that come with an album release.

The Rockpit: You can invite 3 musicians dead or alive to join you for dinner. Who would you invite?

Freedom Of Fear: Johann Sebastian Bach, Yngwie Malmsteen, Chuck Schuldiner – I think this would be interesting 😉

The Rockpit: If you could be credited with writing any song ever written, what song would you choose?

Freedom Of Fear: Beethoven – Moonlight Sonata (1st movement)
