We caught up with Legs Electric’s Kylie Soanes to find out more about this exclusive one-off show locked in for Perth’s Lynott’s Lounge on September 5th, which features Melbourne’s Hot Machine, a fiery all-girl rocker band who have been burning up stages with their nostalgia-heavy classic rock sound. Their high energy live show transports audiences with tough guitars, a thunderous rhythm section and powerhouse choruses you’ll want to sing at the pub.

Sean: Great to catch up Kylie. Excited to hear this show hastily being put together. But this isn’t the first time Legs Electric & Hot Machine have hit the stage together. You have recently returned from a cracking show in Melbourne’s iconic Max Watts. How did that come about?

Kylie: Yeah it was such a great night. We had been planning a Melbourne tour for 2024, but things took an unexpected turn when we were invited to play at the Byron Bay Blues Festival—an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. As a result, the Melbourne plans were put on hold. Originally, we had reached out to Hot Machine and Willie J & The 6V6s because we’re big fans of their work, and we quickly formed a friendship through our shared love of music. Then, out of the blue, The 6V6s got in touch to say they were putting together a music festival and asked if we’d like to be part of it. We instantly said yes, and our agent, Cut Above Collective, locked in another show around that date. The gig was absolutely epic; every band smashed it and the venue was packed wall to wall. Max Watts is such an incredible space to play! We love Melbourne though every band in the scene is so supportive.

So when Sarsha from Hot Machine reached out to let us know the Perth leg of the Cherie Currie tour was cancelled, we knew we both had to jump on the opportunity to put on a show together—it just made perfect sense! We put this together in 48 hours, a world record!

Sean: Oh wow, so this wasn’t a pre-planned show. It’s been incredible to see it evolve so quickly. You mentioned Cherie Currie and of course the fantastic Runaways, but were there ever any influences from them that helped forge Legs Electric?

Kylie: The Runaways have been a massive influence on us, they really paved the way for female rock bands. We’re honestly a bit jealous they got to come up in 1975—what an incredible era for music.

I know we’ve chatted a few times now but not sure if I ever told you this but back in 2014, Kim Fowley, who discovered The Runaways actually reached out to Legs Electric. He told me he had a song he wanted us to record for him. At first, I thought it had to be a joke or spam, there was no way it was the Kim Fowley. But it turns out, it really was. Sadly, he passed away just a few months later, and we never got to hear the song. It’s one of those surreal “what could’ve been” moments we’ll never forget.

Sean: How have you not told me that before? That would have been incredible. Your music has evolved over the years I have been following you but what are the major influences that Legs Electric draw from?

Kylie: We draw inspiration from a wide range of influences spanning the ’60s through to the ’90s. We’re all about guitar-driven, classic rock sounds. Forming an all-female band was never something we set out to do, it just happened naturally as we were playing in other bands together at the time. We are really lucky to be able to play with such amazing musicians that love rock n roll.

Sean: The last few years have been incredible but what have been some of the highlights that really stick out?

Kylie: One of Legs Electric’s biggest highlights was supporting KISS—it was an unforgettable experience. We also had the honour of supporting Cherie Currie from The Runaways, which was incredibly special given how much her band influenced us. We were stoked when Hot Machine got that tour! Yes, The Girls!!

We’re also loving that more female acts are making waves right now. Bands like Hot Machine are leading the charge—they’re fierce, insanely talented musicians, and their live show is just next-level. The first time I saw them at Max Watts, I became an instant fangirl. They absolutely shred.

Legs Electric

Sean: We can’t wait to catch them when the hit Perth. Got to say I absolutely loved the last single ‘Volcanic’ which was released earlier this year. Any plans for more new music in the near future?

Kylie: Thanks Sean. The good news is we are currently writing a brand new set of songs and are aiming to hit the studio in early 2026.

Sean: Great news. We’ll keep our ears open and please make sure you send us any news so we can get it up here on The Rockpit. So before you go… my dinner guest question. Three musicians, dead or alive, to join you for dinner one evening! Who’s invited?

Kylie: Jim Morrison, Ozzy Osbourne and American singer songwriter Marcus King.

Sean: Wow that was quick! Great table too. Last album you listened to?

Kylie: Marcus King’s ‘Young Blood’.

Sean: I’ll check that one out. And finally, if you could be credited with writing any song ever written, what song would you choose?

Kylie: Oh, it has to be Lynyrd Skynyrd – ‘FREE BIRD’ [laughs] totally not joking either, I f*kin love that song so much.

Sean: Killer! It is a great song so I’ll add it to my playlist! Kylie, as always thank you so much for your time and look forward to catching up at Lynott’s Lounge on 5th September.

Kylie: See ya there and thanks for your support as always Sean.
