What you are about to listen to is ‘Walking’ and ‘Waterfront Blues’, the new double A-sided single from Dave Favours & the Roadside Ashes. The A-side ‘Walking’ is a cover of the Eastern Dark classic and features founding member of the Eastern Dark, Bill Gibson (also ex-Lemonheads, the New Christs etc.) on backing vocals and cowbell.
According to Favours, “I had always wanted to cover this track and initially arranged it with more of a country vibe. I had pedal steel in mind, but once we started jamming it with the band, it just made more sense to lean more towards the original feel of the song, as it’s a track we all grew up loving. Then we reached out to Bill Gibson, to see if he wanted to sing on it. I was blown away when he said, yes. To hear him recreate the backing vocals on a song that has been such a massive part of the soundtrack to my life sent chills up my spine.” The track is exclusive to this release.
The cover art for the single is a tribute to the original Eastern Dark release that ‘Walking’ was taken from.
The AA-side Waterfront Blues is the first track to be lifted from Dave Favours & the Roadside Ashes forthcoming third album and is the perfect companion piece to ‘Walking’.
“The song is very nostalgic. It’s about wanting to return to a simpler time. The waterfront that I’m referring to in the title is Waterfront Records, the shop and record label that was a very “happy place” for me in my younger years. Waterfront Records, the label, also happened to be the home of the Eastern Dark, so as soon as we recorded Walking, I knew exactly which track was going to be on the other side of the single,” Dave said.
Dave Favours & the Roadside Ashes are known for their melding of alternative country and indie rock and whilst there’s some signature twang in there, ‘Waterfront Blues’ definitely leans towards the latter.
