LIVE REVIEW: DRACOREX With Special Guests PSYCHOSIA & RIOT AFTER MIDNIGHT

The Catfish Bar, Fitzroy, Victoria - 19th January 2024

Dracorex

Psychosia is a 4-piece band comprising of Joshua Flint on vocals, Adam Haley-Perkins on guitar, Sam Bonanao on bass and Sam Duncan on drums. How do I describe their music? This is a type of sound I can not categorise. Psychosia take you on a journey of eclectic styles mixed together. They have techno beats mashed with heavy/hard rock. Joshua’s vocals go from monster to angelic as quick as you can blink a eye. I have never heard this type of
style before and it did mess with my mind a bit.

Psychosia

I couldn’t decide whether their music was chaotic or incredibly artistic.  This hard rock with techno infusion was a joy to listen to, as it was so original. Musically the band were tight and vocals were unconventionally cool. Set was only 30 minutes long and was filled with 5 original songs, which 2 of them can be found on Spotify. If you like heavy metal and are looking for something a bit quirky give Psychosia a listen to, you won’t be disappointed.

Riot after Midnight

Riot after Midnight performed a 30 minute set containing 6 songs. They are a 4-piece band of mates with Fouldsy the main vocalist and on bass, Johnny on lead guitar, RJ on guitar and Dave on drums. The 5th member of the band “Bethany” has been touring with the boys for 12 years after being picked up one night from a crack alley. She is tied to RJ’s microphone and is incredibly quiet through out the gig. This is because she is a doll!
Riot after Midnight are a self proclaimed “Party Band”, who play good pub rock music. They make the crowd feel like they have crashed someone’s garage jam or backyard party.

Riot after Midnight

The stage was too small for these party boys  who’s fun on stage is infectious to the crowd. The band were walking into the crowd while playing, singing and throwing treats to the punters. Even giving free CD’s of their music away. Rod Stewart is known for kicking soccer balls out into the crowd, but Johnny is the first performer I have ever seen kick a AFL football into the crowd.

Riot after Midnight are all about the joy of mates playing in a band together.

Tonight’s show was a celebration of the release of Dracorex EP “Stories from broken homes” at the Catfish bar’s upstairs intimate band room. Dracorex the band got it’s name from a dinosaur which means “Dragon King”. They opened their show with a pyro technic display breathing fire like a dragon onto the stage and into their music. Dracorex are a hard and fast hard rock/metal 4 piece band with James Brennan on vocals, Richard Grimm on lead guitar, Joey Allen on bass and Michael Maric on drums.

The drums and bass playing are the heart beat of the music with Richard on lead guitar showing off his musical talent. His fast nimble fingers and guitar solos are a joy to the ears and eyes. James vocals are strong with a powerful growl through out his performance. His vocals at times reminded me of Dave Mustaine from Megadeath. Playing a 9 song set which had the crowd banging their heads to the beat. The outstanding song of the night for me was “Not coming home” for it’s crunchy starting off rift, catchy beats and strong vocals.

With pyro technics through out the set the band ended with shirts off and everything left on to the stage. 1 extra song was played as  the crowd were wanting more. If you are wanting more or would like to check these guys out for yourself their next gig is at the Stay Gold in Brunswick, Victoria on the 26/1/24. If you are in the area I recommend you buy a ticket
