EP Review: Silverthorne – Tear The Sky Wide Open

Release Date: February 21st 2020 - Golden Robot Records

Silverthorne - Tear The Sky Wide Open

Pete Shoulder is fast cementing himself as one of the UK’s finest vocalists, having spent time with Winterville, Scott Gorham’s 21 Guns and also working with Thunder’s Luke Morley on their wonderful project The Union, which saw them release three albums between 2010 and 2013.  SILVERTHORNE is Shoulder’s next musical indulgence and judging by the reception the first single received back in August 2019, a whole host of fans are just as excited to hear what the three-piece have instore for our listening pleasures.

Their debut EP Tear The Sky Wide Open is due for release on 21 February through Golden Robot Records and could very well be one of the EP releases of the year.  Shoulder also handles guitar duties and is joined by legendary drummer Brian Tichy (Whitesnake, Ozzy, Slash, Billy Idol, Foreigner) & bassist Daniel Spree (Phil X & The Drills) to create a powerful trio delivering rousing bluesy rock sounds with a hard rock edge.

The EP opens with the title track Tear The Sky Wide Open, which was the first single that set so many tongues wagging.  It’s a monster of a tune and is such a strong starter song that you could be guilty of worrying have they blown themselves out too early.  But fear not for this most certainly isn’t the case with Roll Me Back Again keeping you hooked as it takes the edge off the pace to deliver us a slower but equally powerful track.

Silverthorne’s second single Black River Rising which was released back in November, is another change in direction and shows the band versatility with its bluesy & moody groove with haunting guitars but Shoulder’s powerful vocal range on full show.  Movin’ picks the pace back up with Tichy providing a weighty beat to this one with its catchy chorus & screaming guitar solo.  The EP closes as it started with the powerful Haunted by the Dawn which showcases what this band can and hopefully will bring us more of in the future as Tichy, Shoulder & Spree deliver a crashing rock track full of drums, guitar, groove & vocals.

Tear The Sky Wide Open was recorded on the outskirts of Los Angeles and clocking in at nearly twenty-five minutes long is a wonderful EP with variety, depth & killer vibe.  I do hope Silverthorne are looking to release a full length album for maybe later in the year as this was a fabulous listen…and I want more of this in abundance!
