It’s been 20 years since the Melbourne based band Southern Sons played together. Jack Jones (lead vocals and guitar), Phil Buckle (guitar and vocals), Peter Bowman (guitar and vocals), Geoff Cain (bass) and Virgil Donati (drums) formed the band in 1989 releasing their first album Southern Sons with the debut single ‘Heart in Danger’ peaking at number 5 on the ARIA charts. The band split in 1996 after the release of their third and last album ‘Zone’ to the dismay of their loyal fan base.

Southern Sons fans had to wait 20 years to see them onstage again and even without the original formation as Phil Buckle declined to join them for their Reunion Tour, the other band members joined forces to bring some Vintage Aussie rock back to their fans.

At the Chelsea Heights Hotel everything is set for the 90’s icons with the crowd being competently entertained by the folksy sound of the Kyneton based musician, Taylor Sheridan.

On the side a merchandise store is open, and I can’t resist buying a Jack Jones Unplugged CD.

A chat with their passionate fans reveals the band were very generous with their time having them backstage beforehand for photos and autographs which they very proudly display for anyone who wants to see.

The heroes of the night hit the stage a bit after 9pm with their great rock ballad ‘Always & Ever’ followed by ‘Something More’ and the crowd joins in loud and proud, after all it’s been a long wait since 1996.

The band engages very well onstage as they take the crowd on a time travel with a fan tailored setlist. Jack Jones retains a sound stage presence that still captivates his public. ‘Heart in Danger’ is the high point of the night having everyone pumped and singing to their hearts content.

Southern Sons gives Chelsea Heights Hotel a fun time full of nostalgia, taking their fans 30 years in time.
