Set Before Us - Enigmas

Hailing from Sweden comes this outfit who is not afraid to raise the bar in brutality terms. Mixed with melodic passages and spiralling guitar licks, this is not your typical metalcore band, don’t assume they all sound the same, maybe they do a bit but you can hear their own style and this mini album leaves you on the edge of your seat.

After a barrage of guitar licks the tension builds and a bombastic beginning drops like a hammer blow to numb our senses, torrential sounds falls like a waterfall and it never ceasees to give us an inch of space to catch our breath. There’s passages when the intensity levels reach the high point but when the brutality side hits you hard you know they mean business but also there’s parts when their melodic side flows and merge smoothly and brings another dimension to this band. What it brought to my attention is metalcore looks like it is headingin  a different direction as these new bands are blending into more melodic territories, some of them are clones but some bring their own sound.

One of the songs that really struck me was “Earth Destroyer” which is intense and tame at the same time, is not repetitive, the flow goes on and on and the final moments are agonic if I can put into words. One of those tracks where you can hear the band in full flight, no gimmick just straight up metalcore. Another song like “Eye to Eye” brings the decibel levels up to sum up the passion, the growling vocals creates that sinister vibe around the songs and the clean singing fits perfectly in between the songs,.“Dusk, Dawn” is one of those songs that leave you thinking as the piano intro appears out of nowhere to create a different vibe while the double drum bass explodes like a Molotov bomb and leaves a trail of destruction, for a mini album this one totally shreds.

Who could believe that a band from Sweden could have the chops to play this genre as we all know this country is most famous for underground metal but bands coming from this country has their distinguished sound and this flows all along the album, keep your eyes peel for what’s next.
