ALBUM REVIEW: Asia – Symfonia – Live in Bulgaria 2013

Frontiers Records - February 24th 2017

To some of us ASIA were that band who bridged the 70’s and pointed the way forward to Rock in the 80’s . For more than a few years, quite unexpectedly for a band born out of Prog masters ‘Yes’, they were huge, yet for me I never really got past the singles and that first classic album.

With the sad passing of vocalist John Wetton on January 17th this year this album stands as the most immediate marker of his legacy, but in truth the man offered and gave so much more to music. While he rose to fame with Family and King Crimson, he was equally famous for his stints in Roxy Music, Uriah Heep and Wishbone Ash. To many though it’s ASIA where he cemented his place in mainstream Rock history.

‘Live in Bulgaria’ is a nice album, it’s a live album augmented rather than overtaken by orchestra and by and large the orchestral touches enhance the overall warmth of the performance. It’s also an album for the fans taking on board not only the hits, but also songs from the wider ASIA catalogue.

The album is also available on DVD and gives fans the chance to rekindle the memories of a great performer.
