PARAMORE

BRAND NEW EYES
Released September 2009

“Brand New Eyes” is the third studio album from American pop rockers Paramore, fronted by Hayley Williams, whose heartfelt lyrics and sugar-sweet voice set the band apart from the competition.

Unfairly lumped in with the pop-punk brigade, the songs herein are far more structured than anything punk, and show a considerable progression from previous album “Riot”.

Williams sings about the normal things 20 year old girls sing about – love, their place in the world, and struggling with their newly adult emotions in the big wide world – and she does it well, with a strong voice and an enthusiastic and capable backing band.

Sometimes these younger poppier bands drench their tunes in saccharine, making it more appealing to a teen audience who know no better, but it’s refreshing that Paramore don’t fall into that trap. It’s no surprise this album will still be a big hit with kids of a similar age, but there’s enough depth, melody and intelligent songwriting here to keep us older rockers interested as well.

Standout tracks ‘Ignorance’, ‘Brick By Boring Brick’, ‘Where The Lines Overlap’ all rock along at a boppy pace and hook their melodies into your cranium effortlessly. ‘All I Wanted’ could almost be Evanescence or Halestorm with the addition of some gothic strings, as Williams bellows her heart out impressively. On the other side of the coin, ‘Playing God’s lyrics are a bit self indulgent in a pouting Avril Lavigne way, and ‘Misguided Ghosts’ is all a bit too Tegan And Sara for my liking.

Overall though, a confident and mostly exciting third album from a band to keep an eye on – though despite the boys’ best efforts, it is Williams herself who is the one to watch, and as her voice and songwriting matures she could very well evolve into a major force indeed.
