Megadeth – Endgame

Dave’s back!

Dave Mustaine is back and he’s as pissed off as ever! Megadeth’s new album explodes into life with furious instrumental Dialectic Chaos, snarls directly into This Day We Fight! and barely lets up for a moment until the end.

Some of the guitar lines are a little slower and more measured than the speed metal days of yore, but Mustaine is a consummate and confident player and there’s no confusion here like we saw on Risk a few years ago: this is Megadeth as Dave intended and as we love them.

Songs of war, both global and personal, abound, and prove Dave is still fired up and raring for a fight. At various times he wants to go out “killing his enemies”, or “like a mad dog” and his fury at the world is both contagious and purgative.

44 minutes tells the story of a firefight after a robbery gone wrong, and despite some lyrics sounding awkward on first listen, it draws you in quickly, as it does on How The Story Ends, featuring some classic old school Megadeth riffing and soloing.

Throughout, ENDGAME harkens back to classic Megadeth and is a masterclass in focussed fury, just like all Mustaine’s best work. I can’t wait to hear these songs live in November when Megadeth tour in support of Slayer!
