HYSTERICA - Metalwar

Viking girls of heavy metal!

Stockholm girls Hysterica are modern day metal Vikings who are taking their old-school metal axe attack to the world and pillaging all in their paths on the way.

Metalwar takes no prisoners in it’s Iron Maiden meets Motorhead at a leather n’ studs convention thrown by Saxon & Helloween approach. Girls of Heavy Metal and Louder (“Stand up n’ shout – LOUDER!”) clearly let us know that ballads will be thin on the ground here: it’s metal the good old fashioned way, with a rock solid rhythm section, and vocals and guitar sharing centre stage. The production on Metalwar reflects that too, with the guitar sound razor sharp and clean, and the vocals crisp and warm at the same time.

Girls they may be, but they sure sound like they can match it with the blokes – just take a listen to opening track We Are The Undertakers, bubbling over with snarl and menace, and Devil In Me as a statement of serious intent. Final track Pain in The Ass is another standout track, with frenzied guitar and an absolute pounding metal beat. And I just loved Sinderella’s final growled lyric on the album being “Just get the hell outta here!”

It’s no secret I’m a big fan of chicks in rock, and a girl with a guitar does it for me, but all too often female rockers either try to forsake their feminity to be “one of the boys” or overplay their sexuality to get noticed. Hysterica avoid these traps by showing great confidence in themselves and their abilities – Sinderella’s vocals are undeniably feminine while still being lush and raw simultaneously – and pull no punches in their obvious love of the music they are playing.

Metalwar is a great debut for this young band, and with some touring under their belt their follow up should be well worth seeking out.
