PART ONE OF MANY...
THEROCKPIT.NET'S TOP PICK?
ROCK N AMERICA
When it gets to this time of year theRockpit.net’s attention turns to one of the greatest experiences a Rock Fan can have: the great Summer Festival Season.
TheRockpit.net crew were weaned on the great festivals of the 1980s and in particular that great institution of the DONINGTON MONSTERS OF ROCK. In those days you took what you could get and what was local and what you got was pretty awesome, but that’s another story (coming soon)… The nineties had its moments too with the birth of LOLLAPALOOZA and OZZFEST, then things sort of calmed down a bit but we still got CRUEFEST and GIGANTOUR. This decade, judging by 2010, looks like the love of Rock is back again with more festivals springing up every day.
Over the last few years I have found myself drawn towards the States to sample some of the bands I grew up with who are still out there on the circuit; and also to catch a few that never made it over the pond back in the day.
This year I was seriously considering Europe and catching some of the glorious institutions over there like WACKEN, ROCKPLAST, PINKPOP, BOSPOP or maybe the lesser know French HELLFEST, or the legendary SWEDEN ROCKS, even the Metallic BLOODSTOCK or SONISPHERE?
But then what about Japan I thought: there’s SUMMER SONIC and LOUD PARK? Some of the newer European Festivals maybe like NORWAY ROCK or STOCKHOLM ROCKOUT? Maybe a stint in South America? And all that was before we really started to check out some of the new Asian Festivals out there. We had of course already enjoyed the Australia season at BLUESFEST, BIG DAY OUT and the pick of the lot downunder – SOUNDWAVE.
Many sleepless nights later I came to the conclusion that there are more Festivals out there in 2010 than there have ever been; and a very large proportion of them fit my Rock criteria. I gave up researching too hard when I got to 500 (though found about 1200), so the Festivals we are looking at are very much the tip of the Iceberg (though we have tried to cover all the majors).
First up we’ll take a trip to the States, mainly because that’s where I will end up this year. For me for me it's a road trip to Oklahoma City to catch up with friends and see the first ever ROCK N AMERICA festival which for me is the pick of the US summer festivals calendar. Look out for reports in July.
If I get the chance I will also be making a trip to this year's FIREFEST at my old stomping ground - Nottingham Rock City in the UK. It may be small but it's perfectly formed and great to see music like this alive and kicking on both sides of the pond.
If only theRockpit.net’s funds were endless. In a perfect world we’d be doing the STOCKHOLM ROCKOUT, DOWNLOAD, WACKEN, HELLFEST, SONISPHERE, SWEDEN ROCKS, ROCK ‘N AMERICA, SUMMER SONIC, FIREFEST and as many other festivals we could logistically fit in!
There’s just something so appealing about standing in a large crowd of strangers listening to loud music, making new friends and maybe even taking on board a beer or three? I’ve been knee-deep in mud, had tornados and storms, floods and at the other end of the scale blistering, face-melting heat and I still keep coming back for more. Why? It’s just what we do.
If there is anything out there that we really should be telling people about contact me at email@example.com whether you are a band, a promoter or fan I'll try my hardest to make sure it all gets a mention.
What else do we recommend? Read on my friends and like me you'll be wishing that wallet was bottomless!
As we speak the second Melodicrockfest is over for the year. It may be small, but with a great line up. Andrew at Melodicrock.com does a great job and let's hope this runs and runs

|SOUTH TEXAS ROCKFEST
MAY 22-23 2010
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS
Plenty TBC but there's still some booked that take our fancy: SAXON headline Friday with STEVEN ADLER, then on Saturday its QUEENSRYCHE, KEEL, THE RODS and DANGEROUS TOYS have already been added
|ROCK ON THE RANGE
22-23 MAY 2010
Rock on the Range promises to be a great event set over two days and several stages. A bit of a heavier festival with many newer bands.
If you like the sound of Godsmack, Rise Against, Deftones, Puddle of Mudd, Drowning Pool, Sevendust, Limp Bizkit, Rob Zombie, Seether, Theory Of A Deadman, Bullet For My Valentine, Five Finger Death Punch, Apocalyptica
…and my highlights: STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, BUCKCHERRY, SLASH and THE TREWS it could well be worth a look.
28-30 MAY 2010
I have spent my last few summers at Rocklahoma. Not this year. With new dates and a new style of music, it just didn't make it for me. It is still a great festival mind with some great bands I certainly wouldn't mind seeing. If newer bands are you thing and you appreciate a touch of the old school then check out these from the line up: GODSMACK, BUCKCHERRY, SAVING ABEL, ZZ TOP, CINDERELLA, SALIVA, TESLA and THE LAST VEGAS
This year also sees the return for the fourth year running of theRockpit.net's good friends: the GYPSY PISTOLEROS. We wish we were there just for that!
|BONNAROO MUSIC FESTIVAL
10-13 JUNE 2010
I always wanted to go to Bonnaroo. More than just a music festival, more of an event but again it falls a bit short this year for the travelling rock fan.
Though if the likes of: DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, KINGS OF LEON, TENACOIUS D, FLAMING LIPS (Doing Dark Side of the Moon), THE DEAD WEATHER, THE BLACK KEYS or JEFF BECK float your boat then this is the only festival for you!
JUNE 19 2010
The M3 Festival also looks pretty cool this year with a line up that boasts: KIX, VINCE NEIL, WARRANT, TRIXTER, LA GUNS, JETBOY, NELSON, DIZZY REED, BANG TANGO and Z02
With THE SCORPIONS headlining if you like your festival fix to last just a day. Then this might be your festival.
JUNE 24-JULY 4
Summerfest (also known as "The Big Gig") is a bit of a legend and seems to have been going forever. It's a huge endurance test for the natives but thankfully it's not 11 solid days of rock so there is plenty of time to rest.
Summerfest attracts about 1,000,000 people each year so you could say it was big, but definitely not the most ROCK of festivals. BON JOVI headlined in 2009 and this year you can still get your ROCK fix with bands like: JEFF BECK, TOM PETTY, ZZ TOP, CLAPTON & DALTRY,
SANTANA & STEVE WINWOOD, JOAN JETT, SCORPIONS, RUSH
14-17 JULY 2010
You could argue that this year’s event isn't quite at the same level as last years, but there are already some great bands in the line-up and more to be announced. If I could afford the tickets I'd be there for sure!
A line up that includes: SAMMY HAGAR & THE WABOS, BUCKCHERRY, COLLECTIVE SOUL, TONIC, REO SPEEDWAGON, PAT BENATAR, PAT TRAVERS, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, BLACK SONE CHERRY & BLACKBERRY SMOKE then this may be your festival
|ROCK N AMERICA
JULY 23-25 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK
There is only one festival to be at this year if you like that certain type of music that was killed by grunge in the 1990's and that is here at ROCK N AMERICA my new spiritual home. Brought to you by the team that put on ROCKLAHOMA the last few years we are now on their home turf and this looks absolutely AWESOME!
With more bands to be announced we already have: SCORPIONS, TWISTED SISTER, RATT, DOKKEN, WARRANT, GREAT WHITE, LITA FORD, SLAUGHTER, MSG, LA GUNS. FIREHOUSE, BULLETBOYS, LYNCH MOB, PRETTY BOY FLOYD, STEELHEART, FASTER PUSSYCAT, JOHN CORABI, ENUFF Z'NUFF, TRIXTER and TOXIN on board.
DAKOTA ROCK FEST
JULY 22-24 2010
SIOUS FALLS, SD
The only thing that stopped me hitting this last year was the logistics of it, in between Rocklahoma and in the midst of an Aerosmith and ZZ Top tour I just couldn't make it work. This year as it clashes with ROCK N AMERICA I miss out again. One day I'll get there. This year there are still a lot to be confirmed but if you like the sound of: LITA FORD, BRETT MICHAELS, MAMA KIN, BLACK MOLLYS, TALON. TED POLEY, MOLLY HATCHET, WARRANT and VINCE NEIL it could be for you.
JULY 23-24 2010
Competing directly with ROCK N AMERICA but without the real killer line-up and only over two days, this may be the concert for you if you are in the Kansas area.
STYX, Y&T, TWISTED SISTER, KIX, WINGER, and our friends TOXIN all put in appearances.
Please note that these are just a very small selection of what you can find this year in the States. As many of the festivals listed are still booking the bands listed are only samples of the bands still scheduled to be playing. Please check the festivals out yourselves for new acts and/or possible cancellations or rescheduled dates. theRockpit.net accepts no responsibility for the accuracy of the information published but will happily update the information if you believe any details to be incorrect.
