EDGUY – Tinnitus Sanctus

Edguy hail from Germany and play unapologetic old school heavy metal, full of fat riffs, fast and furious solos and boast an epic sound that has evolved into an individual style over the course of their 8 studio albums. If comparisons have to be made, think a little Iron Maiden, a little Helloween, an old school approach to classic metal, and just a pinch of sleaze.

Ministry of Saints and Sex Fire Religion blast out of the speakers like a panzer division on a blitzkrieg mission, The Pride Of Creation sees Edguy venturing into Power Metal territory and Nine Lives is custom built to play in an arena with a huge chanted chorus.

There’s a touch of Judas Priest in the guitar work on Wake Up Dreaming Black and Dragonfly calls to mind fellow Germans Accept in it’s epic, stormtrooping riffs and classic metal solo.

Tobias Sammet has a great classic metal singing voice in the Dickinson/ Dio mould, and he puts in a great performance throughout this album – just listen to his pipes on 9-2-9 and Speedhoven if you need convincing of this man’s talent.

The album closes with Dead Or Rock – a foot stomping, head banging rocker with a singalong melody and a great solo, and Aren’t You A Little Pervert Too – showing the cheeky sense of humour we’ve come to love from this band of deviants and reprobates.

Tinnitus Sanctus is also available with a bonus disc recorded live in Los Angeles. The ten tracks featuring therein are cherry picked from throughout their career and delivered with Edguy’s customary precision and enthusiasm, getting the crowd involved from the first song.
