POPA CHUBBY

THE FIGHT IS ON

Released March 2010

The big man with the big guitar is back with another collection of great songs to rock out to.  Mister Chubby plays a mean guitar and has a meaner growl, and despite being firmly based in the blues, pretty much everything here rocks hard.

In the past he has been quite in thrall to the church of Jimi Hendrix – to best effect on his triple CD “Electric Chubbyland” – but he’s also shown he loves a bit of 60’s soul, 70’s funk and some classic rock as well.

“The Fight Is On” is a remarkably diverse album with much to offer even the most casual listener.  The big man has a way with a great tune – ‘NYC 1977 til…’ is a really groovy seventies bopper with a chunk of ‘Walk on the wild side’ and some Buffalo Springfield guitar, ‘Greedy for gold’ is blues at it’s fastest & punkiest, ‘The Right Time’ shakes it’s 60’s soul-influenced butt with a wah-wah Motown swing that is irresistible.

Finishing off with the one-two punch of the ZZ Top flavoured ‘Wicked Wanda’ and a cover of Motorhead’s ‘Ace Of Spades’ prove his claim that “The Fight Is On” is his ode to classic rock, and could be the best appetite-whetting album closer of the year, and I would seriously love the opportunity to see the big fella play these songs and more from his extensive back catalogue live.

Popa reckons he pulled out some of his best guitar work on “The Fight Is On” and I’d have to agree – this could be the album that finally elevates him above cult status.
