And the juggernaut that is Metallica had rolled into Perth to play 2 shows at the Burswood Zeppelin in the final stages of their World Magnetic Tour.. The Rockpit crew have had their Magnetic Zone tickets for near on 6 months and now was time to be repaid by Jaymz, Lars and Co ...

Unfortunately we were waylaid taking refreshments down the road and missed the set by Baroness, entering the arena to Lamb of God intro track The Passing, and a huge stage bang in the middle of the floor ...and an already buzzing vibe in the air.

Randy J Blythe and his posse of long haired ( and even longer beards - the ZZ Top of Metal ? ) cohorts got the swelling crowd pumped up with a very tight and crunchy riff laden set. Blythe worked the large stage as his band mates pummelled their way through what is now becoming a very impressive body of work, his little speech regarding his fondness for the word Motherfucker being an amusing aside to the full frontal attack.

Ending with the incomprehensible screamo of old tune ‘Black Label’ is probably the only area where the band could maybe improve as only real diehards are going to appreciate this one..but respect for keeping true to their roots. Their 3rd time in our state in less than 2 years and they get better every time.

The lights dim, the familiar intro ‘The Ecstasy of Gold’ commenced, the fricken laser beams sprouted from the floor and the crowd went absolutely nuts .. the heartbeat intro to ‘That Was Just Your Life’ throbbed and then Metallica appeared and off they went - the sound was spectacular at floor level - up with the best I have ever heard live ..’The End of The Line’ was next up.. lowering coffin shaped lighting rigs, fog, jazz cigarette smoke ..and the first big arena sing-along with ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’ ... James the Het telling us we were part of The Metallica Family with sincerity and we were hooked.

‘Fuel’ was accompanied by huge flames from centre stage, searing my fluffy ear bits even from the rear of the floor area, sweaty, shirtless tossers pushing through .. for fucks sake if you can't handle the Pit don't enter ..and then the acoustic intro to ‘Fade to Black’ had the hairs standing on the back of the neck .. Lars kit slowly revolving, Rob Trujillo crabbing his way about the 4 corners of the massive stage - maybe a bit too low for the height challenged people at floor level ..Kirk unobtrusively shredding .. and our Father James preaching from the Pulpit.

Then some good old shit with ‘The Four Horsemen’ and Kirk showing off his fast solo skills ..and onwards .. people starting to climb the lighting rig towers ..WTF why is security not stopping them ? .. Metallica forge ahead... ‘Sad But True’ and ‘Unforgiven’ from the Black album and my personal favourite from “Death Magnetic”, ‘All Nightmare Long’ with a Slayer-esque intro... then it is the classics – ‘One’ / ‘Master of Puppets’ , ‘Nothing Else Matters’ .. excellent crowd participation ... people getting punched out , passing out , getting stoned ... hush little baby ... ‘Enter Sandman’ !

The band break before the encore , James emerges and thanks the Family once more, humble James ..then it's cover time with an old Budgie rocker ‘Breadfan’, Mark nods along but still reckons that Budgie's version is superior.

‘Hit The Lights’ is next and Kirk lets his fingers run amok and then the house lights are on , a crazy blonde in mini skirt and stilettos halfway up the tower banging her head as James gets the throng involved in a mass sing along of ‘Seek and Destroy’ whilst large black Metallica beach balls are let loose on the crowd ... the band thanks one and all and gets rapturous response ..Lars promises to be back the next night ( with a different set list as is the norm ) ..thankfully nobody plummets to a bloody death from the lighting rigs .. and the satisfied punters from 10 - 60 years old leave feeling the love from James and with the adrenalin still pumping from one awesome mutha of a show. They hit town around every 6 years so pencil in 2015-16 for the next visit by the biggest metal band on the planet. Excellent show and sound despite being in a shitty airbag hangar like the Dome.

PS Highly recommend the Vezetarian (sic ) Pizza which may have traces of meat from the place down the road!
