DANKO JONES
Below The Belt

“Below the belt” is the libidinous Jones (the man and the band) ‘es sixth album, and it’s a corker - Jones can rock with the best of ‘em, and here they roll with an irrepressable swagger.

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Danko Jones (the band) don’t bugger around with prog rock epics or keyboard laden lighters-aloft balladry: this is heads down, power trio rock n’ bloody roll, and in true rock style the eleven tracks here are primarily concerned with the pursuit of or escape from amorous encounters – none better than ‘Magic Snake’ and ‘Like Dynamite’ (the former) and ‘I Wanna Break Up With You’ (the latter).

It’s Jones’s (the man) self confidence and charisma which primarily wins the day – from the stark white cover photo featuring himself regally perched on a wicker throne, backed by a scantily clad Bond-girl-alike and a roaring lion, to the gloriously smug conceit of naming the band after himself (could you imagine a band called ‘Jimmy Page’ or ‘Angus Young’?), Jones makes no bones about who is steering this hard rocking hot rod.

Along with bandmates John Calabrese and Dan Cornelius, Danko Jones (the band) make a very agreeable noise, and the man brings a Phil Lynott inflection to his vocals – a facet which helps lift some of the more standard material here.

Single ‘Full of Regret’ is another mouth-wateringly catchy track which will go down a treat live, and comes complete with a Lemmy-featuring, gun-toting video.

Getchoo some Danko for a well needed kick in the arse in the name of rock n’ roll.
