DARK ILLUSION – Where The Eagles Fly

Likeable Euro power metal chumps featuring some soaring vocals and a refreshingly early 80’s approach to guitar sound and solos.  It’s good heavy rock rather than lurching along at breakneck speed, and all the better for it.  Occassional hints of an Iron Maiden & Helloween influence (none more so than on ‘Destiny’s Call’) don’t make it any harder to listen to “Where The Eagles Fly”.

CRUCIFIED BARBARA – Til Death Do Us Party

Swedish femme-rockers lay the boot in on their follow up to 2006’s “In Distortion We Trust”.  The emphasis on album number two is the party – the melodies and vocals are slightly stronger, the guitars slightly less heavy: the songs more considered in their delivery rather than wilfully brutal.  Their debut was a great slab of stormtrooping Scando metal, “Til death Do Us Party” is a statement of intent from a band ready to take on the world.

LORD – Set In Stone

Rising from the ashes of Dungeon, the Lord Tim-led LORD are proudly flying the flag for the glory of Australian metal, and doing so in style.  Collecting together contributions from such far flung luminaries as Craig Goldy, Glen Drover, Pete Lesperance, and many more, this album impresses with its unflinching quality and confidence.  Most of the songs on offer would be at home on an Iron Maiden or Dio album, but it’s with LORD that they belong – the band have evolved an individual style to be proud of, and having seen them live I can confirm that they sound fantastic!  The title track and ‘Be My Guest’ (featuring no less than ten guest guitar and bass solos) are highlights, and the album even closes with a bonus cover version of Kylie’s ‘On A Night like This’, which works remarkably well as a power metal anthem!
