THE ROCKPIT 2010 ROUNDUP – MARK ROCKPIT

ALBUMS…

1. ARMORED SAINT – LA RAZA

Mark says “My personal album of the year in a year of stiff competition when really any in my top ten could have claimed top spot. For an absolutely timeless hard rock sound and controlled ferocity this is destined to be looked back on in time as a great album. If you like it hard and heavy you will love this, but there’s so much more beneath the surface.”

Phil Sandoval of Armored Saint says "I really enjoyed making this record with all of my bandmates.... I think it is one of our best, certainly one of the easiest to make - everything went very smooth. But I also like the diversity and openess of the music. It's one of my favorites!!! Thanks so much!"

2. CRAZY LIXX – NEW RELIGION

Mark: “Ever since I heard these guys first demo I knew they were capable of putting out something special, which is why I wanted to interview Danny before ‘New Religion’ hit. ‘New Religion” is a great album for lovers of eighties hard rock and deserves a huge audience.

3. SISTER SIN – TRUE TASTE OF THE UNDERGROUND

Mark says “This is an album that will grab you by the balls and twist them ever so slightly increasing the pressure until you give in. Take the hardest of Skid row and a gallon of whisky add a female singer with an amazing voice then shake and pour over a set of killer sleazy rock songs and there you have it - the true taste of the underground.”

Liv Jagrell of Sister Sin says"it feels wonderful to hear that we made the 2010 list! Big thanx to all our fans out there that support us, 2011 will be a great year, I just know it!"

4. TERRY BROCK – DIAMOND BLUE

Mark: "Quite simply one of the best Melodic Rock records I have ever heard, beauty, power and emotion and a collection of wonderful songs. If you liked Terry's first solo album or a big fan of Giant or Strangeways, then this is better!"

5. ALLEN-LANDE – THE SHOWDOWN

Mark: "The best Melodic Metal album I heard this year. Truly great songwriting and two of the best singers in the game at the moment combine to produce something that is both powerful and magical."

6 HUNGRY HEART – ONE TICKET TO PARADISE

Mark: “This is a really fine album that I literally only just got to hear so it’s sneaked in. For me this is about as good as Melodic Rock / AOR gets. Memorable songs, beautifully written and a real step forward from what was a great debut.”

Mario Percudani of Hungryheart says "We are very proud to know that our music has been appreciated and it's great to see our album in the same list of all these great artists!"

7. THE GRACIOUS FEW – THE GRACIOUS FEW

Mark: " The remnants of the band Live, make you wonder where they were hiding all of this soul and feeling. At times the ghost of Led Zeppelin is channeled to produce what for me was the surprise of the year. This is a keeper and makes you want more."

8. RECKLESS LOVE – RECKLESS LOVE

Mark: “This album stinks of sex and Summer. And I can’t think of anything that can put a bigger smile on your face than that!”

9. NELSON – LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE

Mark: “The album that Nelson always threatened to put out. Simply beautiful melodic rock that has that timeless quality.”

Gunnar Nelson says “Hey it’s great to hear we made the list. It’s great to hear you all enjoyed the album.”

10. WIG WAM – NON STOP ROCK ‘N’ ROLL

Mark: "It landed almost a year ago and it's still getting regular spins in the house. Infectious and catchy. Everytime I hear this album it makes me feel better! Rock and Roll the way it was meant to be."

11. MARK KNIGHT – BONE RAIL TIGHT

Mark: Something out of left-field that made a big impression on me this year was the debut full-length solo album from Mark Knight. It's a great and diverse record that feels like it comes from the soul. Sure there's a west coast vibe but this album is rooted in the Blue Highways of the South and the Mid-West. One foot in the blues and colourful touches from a multitude of other influences. An important record that promises a lot."

12. ROCK SUGAR – REIMAGINATOR

Mark says: “What an album! You know when you hear about a crazy idea and then see it in action and it just works so much better than you ever imagined it could – that is Rock Sugar. The album sizzles and makes you smile and live these guys know how to tear it up. One of my memories of the year is catching up backstage with Jess and the guys on their first night at the House of Blues in LA.”

13. FIRST SIGNAL – FIRST SIGNAL

Mark: If you loved Harem Scarem then Harry Hess is back with a record that captures the best of his previous band and lashings of melodic stylings. At times you feel you are listening to Journey, this is Melodic Rock of the highest order. Another winner from the Frontiers label."

14. AVENGED SEVENFOLD – NIGHTMARE

Mark: “Along with Trivium and Black Tide, A7X are one of my favorite newer harder sounding bands. This is their best to date for sure, a scorching album.”

15. JETTBLACK – GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY

Mark: “This one really took me by surprise. It’s great that a new band can put together an album of this quality that holds your attention from start to finish. This is quality from start to finish. I can’t wait to talk to the guys in the New Year.”

16. THE UNION – THE UNION

Mark: "I have always been a big Thunder fan, one of the best real Classic Rock bands to come out of the UK and get far less than they deserved. Luke Morley prooves that there is still a huge amount of gas in the tank with this bluesy, soulful masterclass."

17. CIRCLE II CIRCLE – CONSEQUENCE OF POWER

Mark: "Another surprise. I had their debut and to be honest knew very little at all about what they had been doing. If you love old school Metal then this is an album for you. Check them out you'll be as surprised as I was. An album without a weak link and some great guitar and awesome vocals."

18. BABYJANE – ARE YOU LISTENING?

Mark: “This is a local act with a world class sound. I can guarantee that if you love your rock with the grit and dirt still on it, this is a keeper.”

19. UNRULY CHILD – WORLDS COLLIDE

Mark: "The first CD by the original band members for 20 years and this is huge. Absolutely world-class songs and an instant classic."

20. BANGALORE CHOIR – CADENCE

Mark: "Better than their debut album, a real show of force."

21. HEART – RED VELVET CAR

Mark says “This is Heart as they should sound. A wonderfully diverse and beautiful album and a real return to form.”

22. BLACK CROWES – CROWESOLOGY

Mark: "Better than going out with a generic 'Best of' the Crowes reinvent their back-catalogue in a largely acoustic way to show whey they are one of the most important bands of the last 20 years. Don't make that 'hiatus' too long!"

23. TREAT – COUP DE GRACE

Mark: "Classy Melodic Rock from the European masters. Pretty much essential."

24. BUTCH WALKER – I LIKED IT BETTER WHEN YOU HAD NO HEART

Mark: "Butch Walker at his best. A little left-field for me but this is a great alt-pop-rock record."

25. Y&T – FACEMELTER

26. CRASHDIET – GENERATION WILD

27. HARDCORE SUPERSTAR – SPLIT YOUR LIP

28. H.I.M. – SCREAMWORKS: LOVE IN THEORY AND PRACTICE

29. SCORPIONS – STING IN THE TAIL

Mark says “Who would have thought that the Scorpions would go out with an album that manages to recapture the sound and the quality of their glory days. I was lucky enough to see the guys a few times this year and meet them at Rock N America. I asked them there to give up this crazy talk of retirement. We need more!”

30. BAND OF HORSES – INFINITE ARMS

31. SLASH – SLASH

Mark: “He’s done it, the album he always threatened to make, surprisingly fresh and diverse – a very nice album.”

32. SKIN – BREAKING THE SILENCE

Mark says “Skin has always meant a lot to me and were undoubtedly one of the best rock bands the UK produced in the nineties. They reformed for Download last year and this December sees their final tour. If you are a fan of catchy well-written melodic rock with some balls and great vocals check out their final album before the curtain falls for the last time.”

THE HIGH POINTS Of 2010…

(1) The Rock N America Festival, getting to hang with friends old and new and meeting some of the musicians who have meant such a lot to me over the years.
(2) The Road Trip this year and the cool people that made us feel so welcome in the US
(3) The Bang Tango Redux show out in the valley, meeting the guys and Dean!
(4) Hanging with Jess and the guys from Rock Sugar at the House of Blues
(5) Photographing a heap of bands for The Rockpit

AND THE LOW POINTS…

(1) The anniversary of the deaths of a lot of great musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, John Bonham and John Lennon and the loss of another legend – the great RJD. A sad year.

(2) The tragic death of Steve Lee of Gotthard
(3) The prices we pay in WA to see bands at sub-standard venues - Burswood Dome has to be the worst venue in the world for sound.

THANKS

To everyone who has supported the Rockpit this year with all their time and energy. Thanks to the artists who have been kind enough to spare us their time for an interview and to all of the hard working people behind the scenes who make it all happen. Thanks also to the labels and bands who supply us with our review material without you we couldn't exist! And to the promoters who do a wonderful job bringing live rock music to us all.

I had a great year this year and got to meet some wonderful people. I want to thank everyone I interviewed this year and all my new US friends. I also have to say a special thank you to: Mark Knight, Michael T Ross, Steve Blaze (Lillian Axe), Ron Young (Little Caesar), Paul Shortino and Ron Freschi (Babylon AD) especially. And also of course to bands who have become friends: Crazy Lixx, Run Devil Run, Rising Wind and Heaven's Rain I thank in particular for their hospitality.

May all your 2011's rock considerably!
