Recorded live at ‘The Wonderland Spiegeltent’ on March 13 and 14 this year Lloyd’s Spiegel’s latest ‘Double Live Set’ is the best possible introduction to the man who is celebrating 25 years in the business. To those unfamiliar with the name Spiegel in an Australian acoustic Blues institution who over the years has delighted audiences with his unique take on the form. His press release says it best of all “Welcomed into Melbourne’s thriving blues community while still in primary school, Spiegel has gone on from child prodigy to become one of Australia’s big guns of the guitar with a contemporary style that maintains tradition and authenticity without sacrificing originality”.

From the opening notes of the Blues staples ‘Statesboro Blues’ and Robert Johnson’s ‘Love in Vain’ it’s a case of right songs, and incredible treatment that makes Spiegel so essential. And by the time you are into the meat of his own songs like the wonderful ‘New York City’ and  equally engrossing ‘Mississippi Sun’ you know that this is an artist that is equally capable of igniting audiences with his own ‘standards’ rather than rely on the tried and tested classics. Indeed the set is so strong that sometimes it’s hard to pick the originals from the covers which is a testament to any artist.

Spiegel’s own music has a really broad range and appeal, always Bluesy and ‘Rootsy’ it moves from the gentle storytelling of ‘Tangled Brew’ through the vocal-led simplicity of ‘New York City’ to the more raucous ‘Lucille’.

In an album that you can quite simply get lost in there are some great performances along the way like the treatment of Dylan’s ‘I Shall Be Released’ and the evergreen often covered ‘I Don’t Need No Doctor’ which sounds new again given Spiegel’s acoustic take on a song that is so often transformed into a Heavy Rock monster. If you love your Blues and crave the sound of the acoustic guitar as a device to elicit emotion then Spiegel is the artist for you.

If you are still not entirely sure the best option has to be getting out to see him on his national tour and if you’re not based down-under to pick up a copy of ‘Double Live Set’ which sees him in full flow, and top form.

Lloyd’s 25th Anniversary Tour takes him to most capital cities, along with regional dates, with 25 shows winding over the months of June, July and August.

Double Live Set is available from all good retailers and online from 1st July 2015, with iTunes pre-order available from 18th May.
