If you like keyboard-laden laid-back Melodic Rock then China Sky is a band you should be checking out. There’s a relaxed feeling to this second offering from the band who last year returned to the studio after a break of 25 years, splitting almost as soon as they released their debut back in 1988. So here they are again with both original vocalist Ron Perry and bassist Richard Smith in tow.

It’s an impressive album with mid-tempo Melodic opener (and video) ‘One Life’ and the acoustic ballad ‘The Road Not Taken’ immediately impressing.

In truth though there’s so much more to like about this album from a band that if they had better luck back in the day could have gone on to so much more. There is a distinct 80’s sound though, so its less of an update of the band’s original sound than as case of what might have happened next.

The best of the bunch are those openers, but the rocking ‘You are not Alone’; the crunch of ‘I Believe in You’ and late highlight ‘You’ll Get Yours’ are equally impressive. And with the Molly Hatchet connections (losing original guitarist to that band and these days sporting Hatchet’s original drummer  Bruce Crump in their line-up) it’s nice to close with an 80’s rock version of Hatchet’s ‘Dreams I’ll Never See’ though it’s a cover you’ll either love or hate – we loved it.
