WINTERGARDEN - THE NEW VICTORIAN

MIGHTY MUSIC

AUGUST 19 2014

THEY SAY: “Wintergarden was initially created by singer/songwriter Miriam Gardner while co-writing and file sharing on the internet with friends from all over the globe. Miriam quickly involved her guitarist and producer husband Blake Gardner once some promising material began to emerge. The two started consolidating the material into the Wintergarden sound in their own studio which is based in Denmark.”

WE SAY: This is an interesting album from Danish newcomers Wintergarden: part Evanescence / Sevendust, part alternative Metal and opening with single ‘Breathe’ it’s an exercise in simplicity and consistency. Play any track here almost at random and you’ll be beguiled by the strong melodies, killer choruses and solid complimentary instrumentation. Whether it’s the strong and catchy opening trio of ‘Breathe’; ‘Take It’ and ‘Cinderella’ or the Prog rock of ‘The Release’ there’s something for lovers of this type of music around every corner.

Aside from that first salvo we’d pick out the slow building and brooding ‘Can You Wait’; the wonderfully catchy and off-kilter ‘American Pop’; the hauntingly insistent ‘Scarlet letter’ and the final progressive flourish of ‘Fade’. If you love this sort of music then this is a particularly strong album of female-fronted alt-Metal with strong pop-sensibilities.
