VANDEN PLAS - CHRONICLES OF THE IMMORTALS

PATH ONE: NETHERWORLD

FRONTIERS RECORDS

FEBRUARY 21 2014

This is some damn fine progressive Metal and the backstory is just as grand – taking one of Germany’s best-selling book series as its subject matter – Wolfgang Hohlbein’s “Chronicles of the Immortals – Netherworld.” Is a grand experiment comprising of 19 songs for a stage production.

The production itself entitled ‘Bloodnight’ with Vanden Plas singer Andy Kuntz in the lead role had its premiere in 2012 and was a huge hit, and this is what led to the album here which chronicles the first Act of ‘Bloodnight’ with  the second to follow in 2015. Altered somewhat from the stage production – Kuntz now appears as a narrator encapsulating the voices of the other characters.

Musically ‘Chronicles’ is grand, epic and overblown – in the best possible sense!

If you are already familiar with Vanden Plas this record if anything intensifies the experience, there are some huge drums on here and some wonderful solos (many not part of that stage score) but it’s all driven by Reichert’s solid bass and some stunning keys from Wemo.

As a Rock Opera ‘Chronicles’ is certainly best experienced as a single piece of music in a single sitting, but that’s not to say you won’t be moved by certain songs more than others. There is so much to discover here that it’s hard to play favourites, but if you crave a taste then perhaps try the menacing ‘Godmaker’ or the very immediate ‘New Vampire’ the one track that perhaps truly stands alone here, and probably our favourite, though ‘The King and the Children of The Lost’ with its rich harmonies and intricate guitar gives it a good run for its money.

If you love Prog Metal this is a must.
