Timo Tolkki’s latest album ‘Angels of the Apocalypse’ tells the tale of the preamble to the apocalypse and carries on the Avalon project started with the debut ‘The Land of New Hope’ in 2012. This instalment takes the Symphonic Power Metal template to new places with the help of a stellar cast of musicians – reuniting the Stratovarius ‘Dreamspace’ line-up in the process.

This time the vocal cast includes Nightwish vocalist Floor Jansen – handling lead vocals on the first single “Design The Century” – along with Simone Simons (Epica), Fabio Lione (Rhapsody of Fire), David DeFeis (Virgin Steele), Zachary Stevens (Circle II Circle) plus Elize Ryd (Amaranthe) and  Chilean singer Caterina Nix.

If you like your Symphonic Metal larger than life there are some huge moments on ‘Angels’ and not all of them are good! To start with we get the wonderful opening salvo of ‘Jerusalem is Falling’ and ‘Design the Century’ – two powerful openers that take some beating. On the other side of the coin the truly awful ‘Rise of the 4th Reich’ (probably the worst vocal I’ve ever heard DeFeis deliver) that follows leaves you stunned, and like that old joke goes, you are still booing that one when the next one comes along. Joking aside, there isn’t much wrong with the rest of the album at all, except maybe the overwrought ballad ‘You’ll Bleed Forever’ which doesn’t quite work for us.

While it may not be Timo’s best work, and perhaps not as good as the debut Avalon release with tracks like ‘Stargate Atlantis’ and the Metallic ‘Neon Sirens’ he’s managing to recapture some of that magic.
