THY ART IS MURDER

THE AMPLIFIER BAR PERTH WA

DECEMBER 18 2014

After catching the first show at the all ages gig in Leederville the night before, it was good to familiarise myself as a warm up with some of the bands on offer at the following nights show. It was a fantastic metal package put together by the promoters and the headliners and it's something that should be more common to get the fans in the door.

Disentomb helped kick things off with their extremely heavy brand of death metal, a style that certaintly got the crowd moving early on in the night. It was hard not to appreciate the energy that the band gave and thought they were fitting as openers. One band that I was extremely looking forward to seeing and still can't believe they made it all the way to Perth was U.S. metallers Revocation. After the mediocre sound at the previous night's gig, it was a relief to hear them sound phenomenal at Capitol. They have a few albums in their belt now so they are almost veterans in the game by now but they are still largely an underground band who deserve more attention than they already got. Playing tracks off their latest album "Deathless" was a pleasure to hear but the older stuff really got the crowd moving: A good old fashioned thrash metal show but anyone who knows this band knows that they vary in style immensely going from death metal to progressive to hard rock to thrash. It's one of the best aspects of this band and something I hope they continue to do for a while yet.

Tasmania legends Psycroptic are always great to see and after seeing them several times over the years, expectations was always going to be nothing short of positive. With a new album on it's way these guys have been pretty consistent over the years and tonights show was no different. Playing tracks from all across the catalogue, the band tore it up and made it extra hard for the headliners to top it. Thy Art Is MUrder have been gaining some serious attention in recent years including the now infamous controversy at Soundwave Festival not too long ago. Also with a new upcoming album which will be released soon, the band stuck to their older material and put on a heavy show which turned into a frenzy assault that this band has made as part of their trademark signature. Even if you aren't a fan of this band or this type of music, it's hard not to appreciate the energy that they have and it's easy to see why they have been gaining a lot of success outside of Australia. Frontman "CJ" McMahon has an almost Randy Blythe thing going on, getting the crowd riled up and really into it as much as possible. A decent sized crowd was always going to be in the cards and that always makes the show that much better. With a great list of local and overseas talent, metal packages like this are definitely the way to go.
