Three Lions is Melodic Hard Rock by Vinny Burns and Greg Morgan on guitar and drums (both ex-members of Dare and Ten) and new boy Nigel Bailey on bass and vocals.

Opening with two mid tempo soulful rockers in the summery foot-stomping first single ‘Trouble in a Red Dress’ and the equally impressive, if lighter ‘Hold Me Down’ Three Lions starts off solid enough with some robust rock and roll before we take the intensity up a level for ‘Twisted Soul’ which adds a genuine emotion into the mix over the top of some assertive yet compelling guitar.

‘Winter Sun’; probably one of the strongest songs here takes things down a notch to work further on those heart-strings and whilst some of the heaviness may have been lost, if you like you ballads then this is one that will stick. It’s nothing new of course, just compelling melodic rock that harkens back to the classics of the eighties: and while ‘Just a Man’ may have more energy it’s DNA seems to be from a similar, silky mid-eighties period.

The second half of the album sees Three Lions rock out a bit more with ‘Holy Water’ not a million miles from the subdued bluesy vibe of latter day Whitesnake, with a chorus that sticks and some fine guitar.

Fans of Dare and Ten will no doubt love this one as even though this isn’t a carbon-copy of those great bands there is a similar feel. If we had to single tracks out for your attention we’d have to throw the towering ‘Kathmandu’ in there along with the powerful ‘Hellfire Highway’; and the lighter numbers which Three Lions do so well: ‘Winter Sun’; ‘Made For One Another’ and ‘Don’t Let Me Fall’. It’s an album that starts well but really leaves the best till the second half.

Recommended.
