THE VINES WICKED NATURE REVIEW 2014

THE VINES - WICKED NATURE

WICKED NATURE MUSIC

OUT NOW - 2014

Want to hear the best Australian rock album of the year? Want more? Well this is even better – a double album return from the much loved Aussie rockers The Vines. The 2014 vintage though is just a little bit different in that we are back with an all-new three-piece line-up headed by the ever present Craig Nicholls. The sound here has a rawer, harder rockier taste than last time out – 2011’s ‘Future Primitive’ it almost feels like a second coming.

Those who have followed the band will of course know that they were once touted as the Aussie saviours of rock and roll, but the last decade has seen them drop under a few radars due to a number of factors. Things may never quite get back to the adulation we had with the ever golden ‘Highly Evolved’ but this is a huge jump in the right direction: the sound may be just as familiar but on Wicked Nature the song writing mojo is back in spades: this is better than we’ve heard in years.

What ‘Wicked Nature’ delivers is a collection of focussed tight songs that manage to go the distance (there are 22 tracks spread over the 2 CDs). Listen to tracks like ‘Metal Zone’; ‘Psychomatic’ and Out of the Loop’ just from disc one and you will hear some of The Vines best ever distorted angst-filled manic garage anthems.

Disc two is somewhat more subdued to counterbalance the first platter and we get some great pop, ballads and even stabs at folkier fare. It’s not new of course but again songs like ‘Reincarnation’; ‘Fly Away’ and ‘Love is Gone’ show a mastery of the mellower moments.

Music has changed considerably since the Vines were in their pomp, but with songs like ‘Out of the Loop’ there’s every chance that they will be back for the crown and if not this time around then surely next. Welcome back…
