THE DATE SCARIFY SINGLE REVIEW 2014

THE DATE - SCARIFY

SELF-RELEASED

MARCH 2014

As bands go Perth’s The Date always seems to be moving forward, writing, recording and playing live. This single, the second from last year’s latest offering ‘Sedated’, shows why the band is both so unique and so essential to the local scene.

Lead track ‘Scarify’, like so many Date songs, takes an unusual idea, builds a compelling lyric, and melds it to the body of what is essentially a blues-based rocker, anchored by a scintillating guitar solo from Rob Susanto. It’s a song that has long been a live favourite and singled out here it really takes flight. If you love your rock to take you to the slightly edgy territory that you might otherwise not venture alone then the Date is for you.

Conversely supporting tracks like the wonderfully immediate ‘I Don’t Mind’ show an educated, cool hard blues side to the band, and infuriatingly the song lodges itself in your mind so solidly only time and/or alcohol will dislodge it. ‘Sign Up For Summer’ the final track is a lighter, catchy, dare we say it, more summery sound, which will relieve any lingering doubts that the band don’t have a fully-rounded repertoire!  If you love your rock with a sense of humour and love an off-the-wall quirkiness then give this a spin.

Then get yourselves a date with ‘The Date’…
