THE DATE LOOKING DOWN REVIEW 2014

THE DATE - LOOKING DOWN

SELF-RELEASED

JUNE 22 2014

The first time I heard The Date’s new single ‘Looking Down’ was at the Paddington Alehouse in Perth where the band was on a bill with local Hard Rockers Ragdoll. I remember the track standing out mainly because of its humour. It’s also a very cool song.

On the night I remember singer/bassist David Moran setting it up with this premise: “So you’re looking down from 18th floor apartment with a hunting rifle, a friend and some nibbles”. And that is part of the joy of The Date – a band that takes a traditional blues rock power trio format and adds to the mix a pounding beat, some rock-solid bass and some genuine guitar-heroics. If that’s not enough you probably guessed that the other component is their sense of humour.

‘Looking Down’ the song itself takes a bluesy stuttering riff, adds a slick solo, a dash of funk and a cool breakdown to deliver a song that will stick with you. It's a song that in other hands could be run off the mill, but with The Date attack it it shines - it's all there - the performance, the conviction and the unhinged premise of taking that rifle up to your apartment post-apocalypse for some ‘fun’. Best of all though about the Date is that like all the best humour you are never quite sure if they really are completely joking…

Backed with chugging rock and roll riff of ‘Take it Down’ and non-album track ‘Call It Sport’ which starts out with some wonderful guitar and opens out into a rather laid back and beautiful song with some wonderful backing vocals. Its solo is probably one of the finest I’ll hear all year. If this track didn’t make the album I’ll be ordering mine now!

This is serious stuff… perhaps. One thing is for sure though it's damn good.
