With a few bands out there currently going by the name, this version of ‘The Dagger’ hails from Sweden.  Playing a blend of 70’s blues rock and 80’s Metal this is the Swedish Band’s first full length outing after an impressive 7” debut last year.

Borrowing a little from Maiden and Priest as well as the more prevalent feel of Deep Purple, The Dagger has a real old school ‘all about the riff’ feel. Add to that some great vocal lines and some nice twin guitar harmonies and you have music from another time.

One of the things we like most about The Dagger is the simplicity of their approach and the no-nonsense verse-chorus-verse-chorus structure, peppered with some great solos and interludes. Listen to songs like opener ‘All Ahead of You’ and tell me it doesn’t take you right back to the days when Rock ruled and times were much simpler.

On an album where it’s hard to play favourites because of the sheers consistently great material you can really start anywhere. We would suggest the opening track, the Hammond-swing of ‘Skygazer’, the Montrose-like romp of ‘Electric Dawn’ or maybe the lighter Purple-like ‘Ballad of an Old Man’. It’s all great to be honest.

And if you can get the essence of a band by its covers then the inspired rendition of Quartz’ (the British Heavy Metal band from the 70’s with strong Sabbath connections) ‘Mainline Riders’ is obscure enough these days to set them aside (he says reaching for his vinyl copy of Quartz debut album and dropping the needle in the groove of track 1)…
